Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a significant problem after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG). This study aimed to assess the long-term effect of SG with an anterior fundoplication on GORD symptoms.
Methods: A single-centre cohort study of all patients who underwent SG with anterior hemifundoplication (SGAF), with a 2:1 SG only comparison group.
Endoscopic eradication therapy using radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is considered an acceptable alternative to surveillance monitoring for Barrett's esophagus with low-grade dysplasia (LGD). This study aimed to estimate whether RFA for LGD is cost-effective and to determine which factors influence cost-effectiveness. A Markov model was developed to estimate the incremental cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained for RFA compared with endoscopic surveillance.

This study investigated whether a novel surgical NPT workshop, designed and delivered by junior doctors using simulation models for acute otolaryngology conditions, improved the knowledge and confidence level of senior medical students.
Methods: A one-day NPT workshop was held for medical students in their third year of a four-year postgraduate medical degree at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney, Australia.

Background: The barium swallow is a commonly performed investigation, though recent decades have seen major advances in other esophageal diagnostic modalities.
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to clarify the rationale for components of the barium swallow protocol, provide guidance on interpretation of findings, and describe the current role of the barium swallow in the diagnostic paradigm for esophageal dysphagia in relation to other esophageal investigations. The barium swallow protocol, interpretation, and reporting terminology are subjective and non-standardized.
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a delay in treatment for patients having pre-operative CT imaging with both intravenous and oral contrast (CTIVO) compared to intravenous contrast alone (CTIV).

The purpose of this study was to investigate how multidisciplinary weight management involving endocrinology, dietitian, and exercise physiology care, in a real-life healthy weight clinic (HWC) would impact body weight and mass composition in breast cancer women post-adjuvant chemotherapy compared to a cohort of non-cancer women who have been matched by age, ethnicity, smoking, and menopausal status.
Methods: Body weight (kg), BMI (kg/m2), skeletal muscle mass (SMM %), fat mass (FM %), and waist circumference (cm) were collected at baseline of the first HWC appointment, 3 months after baseline, and 6 months after baseline.

Methods: High throughput screening using TaqMan Array Human MicroRNA quantitative PCR was used to determine expression levels of 754 microRNAs in distal esophageal mucosa (1 cm above the gastro-esophageal junction) from 16 patients who had undergone ablation of non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus using argon plasma coagulation pretreatment mucosa, post-treatment proximal normal non-treated esophageal mucosa, and esophageal mucosal biopsies from 10 controls without Barrett's esophagus. Biopsies of squamous mucosa were also taken from 5 cm above the pre-ablation squamo-columnar junction.

Background: Esophageal and gastroesophageal junctional (GEJ) adenocarcinoma is one of the most fatal cancers and has the fastest rising incidence rate of all cancers. Identification of biomarkers is needed to tailor treatments to each patient's tumor biology and prognosis.
Methods: Gene expression profiling was performed in a test cohort of 80 chemoradiotherapy (CRTx)-naïve patients with external validation in a separate cohort of 62 CRTx-naïve patients and 169 patients with advanced-stage disease treated with CRTx.
Background: Epidemiological studies have identified obesity as a major risk factor for cancer in humans, and trials have demonstrated a significant reduction in the incidence of cancer after bariatric surgery. The rapidity of weight loss after bariatric surgery provides an opportunity to identify the molecular changes associated with effective obesity treatment. Indirectly, this may provide some insights into the mechanisms that drive the association between obesity and cancer.
