Article Synopsis
- The study aimed to find out how common non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are among morbidly obese patients about to have bariatric surgery and to pinpoint related risk factors.
- A liver biopsy performed on 60 patients revealed that 95% had NAFLD, with 66.7% diagnosed with NASH; only a small number showed severe liver damage (3 patients with fibrosis).
- The findings indicate that NAFLD is prevalent in morbidly obese patients, and the enzyme γGT was identified as a key predictor of the level of fat in their livers.
