Justice-Involved Youth: Support for Community and Family Interventions.

Justice-involved youth have high rates of mental health symptoms and diagnoses. Unaddressed mental health needs are associated with exposure to adversity and trauma, as well as unidentified or mislabeled symptoms that may be present early in life. Justice-involved youth disproportionately come from low-income families and minoritized populations.

Dog Foster Volunteer Retention.

Volunteers that provide foster care in their homes are a critical resource for animal shelters and rescues and make significant contributions to animal welfare. This project explores the support needs identified by canine foster volunteers via a national survey of 611 respondents by answering the following three research questions:1. LYVE-1-expressing Macrophages Modulate the Hyaluronan-containing Extracellular Matrix in the Mammary Stroma and Contribute to Mammary Tumor Growth.

Unlabelled: Macrophages represent a heterogeneous myeloid population with diverse functions in normal tissues and tumors. While macrophages expressing the cell surface marker lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1) have been identified in stromal regions of the normal mammary gland and in the peritumoral stroma, their functions within these regions are not well understood. Using a genetic mouse model of LYVE-1+ macrophage depletion, we demonstrate that loss of LYVE-1+ macrophages is associated with altered extracellular matrix remodeling in the normal mammary gland and reduced mammary tumor growth in vivo.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP): an underestimated problem after incisional hernia treatment.

Background: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a potential long-term problem following open incisional hernia repair which may affect the quality of life of patients despite successful anatomical repair of the hernia. The aim of this manuscript was to identify the incidence and outcome of patients following open incisional hernia repair in respect of risk factors to develop CPSP.

Methods: A single-center retrospective analysis of patients who underwent open incisional hernia repair between 2015 and 2021 was performed.

Arterial catheterization is considered to be standard procedure for patients undergoing general anesthesia. The most common puncture site is the radial artery (RA), which carries a risk of RA occlusion. Several pieces of literature still recommend the performance of the Allen test (AT) to assess the circulation of the palmar arch.

Perception versus Policy: Which Is More Important to Animal Welfare Volunteer Satisfaction?

There is a large body of work spanning decades examining the factors that lead to volunteer satisfaction. Much of this work has employed self-administered surveys to gather volunteers' opinions or perceptions of factors important for satisfaction which inherently lie within the individual volunteer. Yet scholars have raised concerns about the validity of studies based on perceptions.

Factors Associated with Periodontitis in Younger Individuals: A Scoping Review.

Periodontitis is a disease that affects many young adults, and if left untreated, it can have lasting and permanent effects on an individual's oral health. The purpose of this scoping review was to review the recent literature to identify factors that place young individuals at risk of stage II or III periodontitis. Using the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews, three databases were systematically searched for peer-reviewed human studies published in English that investigated risk factors associated with stage II and/or III periodontitis in individuals less than 40 years of age.

Animal welfare deserts: human and nonhuman animal inequities.

Residents of distressed areas of inner cities have less access to many of life's necessities and amenities than their more well-off counterparts. Geographic proximity has been identified as a primary barrier to accessing care for pets potentially creating animal welfare deserts. This project addresses three questions: Are there visible animal welfare deserts in distressed urban centers?; What human inequities are most strongly related to animal welfare deserts?; and What might be done to address these inequities? Using business location and census data in the city of Detroit, this research identifies distinct animal welfare deserts finding that more prosperous areas have more pet support resources and that the need for services is not related to the location of pet stores and veterinary offices.

Using Sacubitril/Valsartan to Decrease Health care Costs in Population Health Patients.

Value-based care is the foundation of population health. The Health care Economic Efficiency Ratio (HEERO) scoring system is a promising new tool to measure the cost benefits of care in our Accountable Care Organization. HEERO score compares actual costs spent (utilizing insurance claims) and expected costs spent (estimated using the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services Risk score).

Postoperative Analgesics Score as a Predictor of Chronic Postoperative Inguinal Pain After Inguinal Hernia Repair: Lessons Learned From a Retrospective Analysis.

Background: Chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) is a common complication after inguinal hernia surgery and occurs in up to 10-14% of cases. CPIP has a significant impact on daily life, work ability and thus compromises quality of life. The aim of this retrospective study was an in-depth analysis of patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair to further refine the prediction of the onset of CPIP reliably.

Evaluation of the Versius Robotic System for Infant Surgery-A Study in Piglets of Less than 10 kg Body Weight.

Background: We were able to demonstrate the feasibility of a new robotic system (Versius, CMR Surgical, Cambridge, UK) for procedures in small inanimate cavities. The aim of this consecutive study was to test the Versius system for its feasibility, performance, and safety of robotic abdominal and thoracic surgery in piglets simulating infants with a body weight lower than 10 kg.

Methods: A total of 24 procedures (from explorative laparoscopy to thoracoscopic esophageal repair) were performed in 4 piglets with a mean age of 12 days and a mean body weight of 6.

Modeling Animal Shelter Volunteer Satisfaction: The Importance of Internal Policies.

This research examines the predictors of volunteer satisfaction in animal shelters. It assesses the relative importance of volunteer demographics, the attributes of the shelter, and the policies and procedures governing the volunteer experience. Volunteering takes place within organizational contexts creating a dynamic relationship between the individual and the organization.

Multivalent interactions facilitate motor-dependent protein accumulation at growing microtubule plus-ends.

Growing microtubule ends organize end-tracking proteins into comets of mixed composition. Here using a reconstituted fission yeast system consisting of end-binding protein Mal3, kinesin Tea2 and cargo Tip1, we found that these proteins can be driven into liquid-phase droplets both in solution and at microtubule ends under crowding conditions. In the absence of crowding agents, cryo-electron tomography revealed that motor-dependent comets consist of disordered networks where multivalent interactions may facilitate non-stoichiometric accumulation of cargo Tip1.

Ceramide Metabolism in Cardiovascular Disease: A Network With High Therapeutic Potential.

Growing evidence suggests that ceramides play an important role in the development of atherosclerotic and valvular heart disease. Ceramides are biologically active sphingolipids that are produced by a complex network of enzymes. Lowering cellular and tissue levels of ceramide by inhibiting the ceramide-producing enzymes counteracts atherosclerotic and valvular heart disease development in animal models.

Surgical Site Infection Following Single-Port Appendectomy: A Systematic Review of the Literature and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common postoperative complications after appendectomy leading to recurrent surgery, prolonged hospital stay, and the use of antibiotics. Numerous studies and meta-analyses have been published on the effect of open versus conventional laparoscopic appendectomy (CLA) reporting faster postoperative recovery and less postoperative pain for CLA. A development from CLA has been the single-port appendectomy (SPA), associated with a better cosmesis but seemingly having a higher risk of wound infections.

The COVID-19 Animal Fostering Boom: Ephemera or Chimera?

There has been discussion in traditional and social media about increases in the numbers of people willing to foster animals in their homes during the pandemic. However, there is a lack of empirical data on whether that increase was a temporary response to the stress of COVID-19 or the ability to work from home, if it might have lasting effects, or indeed, whether an increase occurred at all. Using a national survey of over 600 animal shelter/rescue foster volunteers it appears that fostering did increase during the pandemic (x = 45.
