The principles of community-based participatory research were applied to an exploratory sexual health study that examined "cruising for sex" among men on a college campus. In the context of a study seeking a broad interpretation of the health implications of cruising, and when faced with methodological challenges, the researchers found these principles to provide invaluable guidance. A review of the research process is offered and the manner in which the principles of community-based participatory research were operationalized for this study is described.

Study Design: A prospective study was performed on 78 asymptomatic pregnancies presenting for genetic amniocentesis. Amniotic fluid samples were analyzed by PCR for the detection of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, by PCR/enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for Mycoplasma and by ELISA analysis for IL-6 concentration.
A prospective design was used to collect data from 132 HIV-positive individuals presenting for mental health care at an inner-city HIV-related mental health clinic located in a large metropolitan area of the Southeastern USA. Data were analyzed to assess associations between study variables and whether participants returned for care following an initial mental health assessment. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which the addition of measures of health beliefs and HIV-related stigma would enhance the predictive capacity of a dropout model that included demographics and health status measures.

Though 'progestin-only' contraceptive regimens have long been associated with user dissatisfaction because of unpredictable vaginal bleeding, it is likely that the substantial contribution of endogenous ovarian oestradiol during such treatments predisposes the bleeding problems. Oestrogen causes endometrial proliferation, hyperplasia and neoplasia if unopposed.

To determine the predictive value of this immunoassay, a double blind study of 13 high risk individuals was conducted by two independent teams. As greater than 90% of BRCA mutations result in protein truncations, a diminished anti-carboxy immunoreactivity relative to anti-amino immunoreactivity was scored as predictive for mutation.

Two pixel-oriented methods for designing Fourier transform holograms--pseudorandom encoding and minimum-distance encoding-usually produce higher-fidelity reconstructions when combined than those produced by each method individually. In previous studies minimum-distance encoding was defined as the mapping from the desired complex value to the closest value produced by the modulator. Objective: We conducted a case-control study to evaluate whether maternal and fetal omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acid status play possible roles in the pathogenesis of preterm birth.
Study Design: Essential fatty acid status in blood and trophoblast tissues was measured in (1) women and their newborns with spontaneous preterm birth and (2) control women and newborns at 34 weeks' gestation (maternal blood) and at term delivery.

The objective of this study was to explore the hypothesis that GnRH-immunized azoospermic rats could be supplemented with T doses sufficient to restore sexual behavior, but insufficient to support adequate spermatogenesis or to allow restoration of fertility.
