Percutaneous Thrombovegectomy as an Alternative to Surgery for Tricuspid Valve Endocarditis.

Background: Undergoing an urgent valve surgical procedure to treat patients with tricuspid valve endocarditis carries a high risk of operative morbidity and mortality. Use of a percutaneous vacuum-assisted system to treat tricuspid valve endocarditis is an alternative to surgical procedures.

Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 187 transcatheter vacuum-assisted aspiration procedures performed in 177 patients with tricuspid valve vegetations at 3 different centers between 2017 and April 2022.

Worldwide Chronic Retrieval Experience of Helix-Fixation Leadless Cardiac Pacemakers.

Background: The growing use of leadless pacemaker (LP) technology requires safe and effective solutions for retrieving and removing these devices over the long term.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate retrieval and removal of an active helix-fixation LP studied in worldwide regulatory clinical trials.

Methods: Subjects enrolled in the LEADLESS II phase 1 investigational device exemption, LEADLESS Observational, or LEADLESS Japan trials with an attempted LP retrieval at least 6 weeks postimplantation were included.

Reimplantation of Thymus at the First Superior Cavo-Pulmonary Anastomosis and Its Outcome.

During bidirectional cavo-pulmonary anastomosis (bidirectional Glenn; BDG), the thymic tissue is often excised to facilitate the exposure of the superior vena cava and its junction with the innominate vein. Subsequently, it is discarded. Since the last two decades, the lead author (ST) has pursued anchoring the excised thymus in its position by suturing it to the opposite unexcised thymic lobe.

Primitive Myxoid Mesenchymal Tumor of Infancy: A Lost Battle.

Primitive myxoid mesenchymal tumor of infancy (PMMTI) is a low to intermediate-grade, poorly differentiated myofibroblastic tumor and is characterized by its tendency to recur locally. It commonly occurs in the 1 year of life and is predominantly seen in the axial skeleton and rarely in the retroperitoneum. We report one such case of PMMTI, which is the second case reported in English literature.

Identification of nine putative novel members of plant-infecting alphaflexiviruses in public domain plant transcriptomes.

Unlabelled: Plant-infecting alphaflexiviruses cause moderate to severe diseases in economically important crops worldwide. In the present study, we identified nine putative novel alphaflexiviruses in nine plant species by exploring the publicly available plant transcriptome data in Sequence Read Archive (SRA) database. Coding-complete genomes of all the identified viruses were recovered and contained five to six open reading frames (ORFs).

Positive Attributable Visual Sources Attenuate the Impact of Trigger Sounds in Misophonia.

Misophonia is characterized by strong negative reactions to everyday sounds, such as chewing, slurping or breathing, that can have negative consequences for daily life. Here, we investigated the role of visual stimuli in modulating misophonic reactions. We recruited 26 misophonics and 31 healthy controls and presented them with 26 sound-swapped videos: 13 trigger sounds paired with the 13 Original Video Sources (OVS) and with 13 Positive Attributable Visual Sources (PAVS).

Contact Force Increases During Radiofrequency Ablation: A Novel Catheter Assessment of Myocardial Response to Thermal Injury.

Background: Contact force (CF) changes after onset of radiofrequency (RF) delivery are not well understood and often ascribed to catheter instability.

Objectives: This study sought to characterize CF changes during RF-based pulmonary vein (PV) isolation.

Methods: Catheter-tip parameters including CF for all RF sessions were extracted from a novel catheter-mapping system from 6 patients undergoing PV isolation.

Practice Patterns and Trends in the Surgical Management of Mismatch Repair Deficient Colon Cancer.

Introduction: Defects in the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) pathway can predispose individuals to colorectal cancer (CRC), with germline mutations in this pathway leading to Lynch syndrome. Consequently, universal MMR testing is recommended for all newly diagnosed CRC patients to detect mismatch repair deficient (MMR-D) tumors, enabling informed treatment decisions. Given the increased potential for metachronous disease in patients with Lynch syndrome, the current guidelines for surgical management of Lynch-associated colon cancer recommend extended resection in patients under age 60.

Lesion Morphometry of the Pentaspline Pulsed Field Ablation Catheter: Understanding Catheter Pose, Rotation, and Dosing.

Background: The pentaspline pulsed field ablation catheter achieves pulmonary vein isolation using 8 stacked, pose-specific applications with rotation. The morphology of pose-specific, single or double applications has not been described.

Methods: One or 2 applications were delivered to select veins and discrete atrial and ventricular sites in 9 swine.

Impact of Screening on Mortality for Patients Diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Safety-Net Healthcare System: An Opportunity for Addressing Disparities.

We describe the impact of screening on outcomes of patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in an urban safety-net healthcare system compared to a non-screened cohort diagnosed with HCC. Patients diagnosed with HCC at John Peter Smith Health Network were identified by querying the hospital tumor registry and allocated to the screened cohort if they had undergone any liver imaging within one year prior to HCC diagnosis, while the remainder were allocated to the non-screened cohort. Kaplan-Meier methods and log-rank tests were used to compare 3-year survival curves from an index date of HCC diagnosis.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure after Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.

Background: Oral anticoagulation is recommended after ablation for atrial fibrillation among patients at high risk for stroke. Left atrial appendage closure is a mechanical alternative to anticoagulation, but data regarding its use after atrial fibrillation ablation are lacking.

Methods: We conducted an international randomized trial involving 1600 patients with atrial fibrillation who had an elevated score (≥2 in men and ≥3 in women) on the CHADS-VASc scale (range, 0 to 9, with higher scores indicating a greater risk of stroke) and who underwent catheter ablation.

Ten Years of Leadless Cardiac Pacing.

Leadless pacemakers (LPs) are self-contained pacemakers implanted inside the heart, providing a clinical strategy of pacing without pacemaker leads or a subcutaneous pocket. From an experimental therapy first used clinically in 2012, a decade later this technology is an established treatment option. Because of technologic advances and growing evidence, LPs are increasingly being used.

SrRuOis a widely studied itinerant ferromagnetic system with intriguing electronic and magnetic characteristics. The electronic transport of SrRuOis highly susceptible to the defects (O/Ru vacancy, chemical doping, ion implantation), and interfacial strain.

Background: Marital conflict and disputes involve many issues to be settled between the couples like finance, health, assets, children, postdivorce securities, etc. The traumatic experiences of separation affect their mental health and the future of their children. Not being conscious of their legal rights and court procedures leads to long court litigation, causing distress and trauma to the couples.

Structure-derived insights from blood factors binding to the surfaces of different adenoviruses.

The tropism of adenoviruses (Ads) is significantly influenced by the binding of various blood factors. To investigate differences in their binding, we conducted cryo-EM analysis on complexes of several human adenoviruses with human platelet factor-4 (PF4), coagulation factors FII (Prothrombin), and FX. While we observed EM densities for FII and FX bound to all the species-C adenoviruses examined, no densities were seen for PF4, even though PF4 can co-pellet with various Ads.

Association Between Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy and Low Anterior Resection Syndrome.

Introduction: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) can be a debilitating condition that develops after undergoing sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a common side effect of platinum-based chemotherapy agents used as systemic therapy for rectal cancer treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential relationship between CIPN and LARS.
