Article Synopsis
  • The insect ATP binding cassette transporter subfamily C2 (ABCC2) is involved in Cry1Ac insecticidal protein resistance in various moth species, with mutations in ABCC2 linked to differing resistance levels.
  • A study used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing on H. zea, a significant crop pest, to evaluate the role of ABCC2 as a Cry1Ac receptor, showing resistance ratios ranging from 7.3- to 39.8-fold with certain mutations.
  • Despite showing some resistance, the observed levels in ABCC2 knockouts were significantly lower compared to other moth species, indicating ABCC2 may not be a primary Cry1Ac receptor in H. zea.

A series of indole based novel Schiff bases was designed as potential agonists of 5-HT receptor that was supported by docking studies in silico. These compounds were synthesized via Amberlyst-15 catalysed condensation of an appropriate pyrazole based primary amine with the corresponding indole-3-aldehyde under ultrasound irradiation at ambient temperature. A number of target Schiff bases were obtained in good yields (77-87%) under mild conditions within 1 h.

In our previous studies, we have demonstrated the association of certain variants of the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR), thyroid peroxidase (TPO), and thyroglobulin (TG) genes with congenital hypothyroidism. Herein, we explored the mechanistic basis for this association using different in silico tools. The mRNA 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) plays key roles in gene expression at the post-transcriptional level.

The tarnished plant bug, (Palisot de Beauvois), (Hemiptera: Miridae) is considered the most damaging pest of cotton ( L.) in the mid-southern United States, although it is established throughout the United States, southern Canada, and northern Mexico. The introduction of transgenic crops for the control of moths in the complex and eradication of the boll weevil, , from much of the United States led to greatly reduced pesticide use in cotton fields, which allowed to emerge as a new primary pest of cotton in the mid-southern United States.

We previously created a mandatory, inpatient, hepatology resident curriculum that immediately improved comfort, knowledge, and career interest in chronic liver disease (CLD). The durability of these effects needs to be known to use this intervention to address the hepatologist shortage. Thus, we aimed to assess this curriculum's long-term outcomes on internal medicine (IM) residents' CLD comfort, knowledge, and career interest.

A Pd-catalysed regioselective synthesis of 4,5-disubstituted 7-membered N/O-heterocycles was achieved the 7- cyclization followed by C-C bond formation of 2-(1-alkynyl)phenylacetamide. The ligand/additive free cascade reaction proceeded in the presence of PdCl in aqueous MeCN when the separate and individual use of methyl vinyl ketone and allyl bromide generally afforded an O- and N-heterocycle, respectively. The pharmacological assay was performed to identify the first example of a 1-benzo[]azepin-2(3)-one based novel inhibitor of PDE4B.

In general, sperm produced in the testis are moved into the seminal vesicle via the vas deferens in insects, where they are stored. How this sperm movement is controlled is less well understood in locusts or grasshoppers. In this study, the effects of age, phase variation and pheromones on male sperm storage were investigated in the desert locust, (Forskål).

Although many toxicological evaluations have been conducted for honey bees (Apis mellifera), most of these studies have only focused on the effects of individual chemicals. However, honey bees are usually exposed to pesticide mixtures under field conditions. In this study, we examined the effects of individual pesticides and mixtures of clothianidin (CLO) with eight other pesticides [carbaryl (CAR), thiodicarb (THI), chlorpyrifos (CHL), beta-cyfluthrin (BCY), gamma-cyhalothrin (GCY), tetraconazole (TET), spinosad (SPI) and indoxacarb (IND)] on honey bees using a feeding method.

When public health programs with single nutrients are perceived to have a poor impact on the target health outcome, the policy response can be to supply more, by layering additional mandatory programs upon the extant programs. However, we argue for extreme caution, because nutrients (like medicines) are beneficial in the right dose, but potentially harmful when ingested in excess. Unnecessary motivations for the reactionary layering of multiple intervention programs emerge from incorrect measurements of the risk of nutrient inadequacy in the population, or incorrect biomarker cutoffs to evaluate the extent of nutrient deficiencies.

Single molecule pulling experiments report time-dependent changes in the extension () of a biomolecule as a function of the applied force (). By fitting the data to one-dimensional analytical models of the energy landscape, we can extract the hopping rates between the folded and unfolded states in two-state folders as well as the height and the location of the transition state (TS). Although this approach is remarkably insightful, there are cases for which the energy landscape is multidimensional (catch bonds being the most prominent).
