Background: The population is aging rapidly worldwide, impacting public health, with countries in the Global South, such as Brazil, aging faster than developed nations. The 24-hour movement behavior is crucial for healthy aging, but its relationship with the neighborhood built environment is underresearched, especially for older adults. The EpiMove Study uses accelerometers and GPS to investigate the relationships between 24-hour movement behavior, community mobility and the neighborhood built environment for healthy aging in older Brazilian adults.

Long COVID has been linked to a decline in physical activity and functional capacity. However, it remains unclear which physical symptoms are associated with specific aspects of movement behaviors and functional capacity. We aimed to investigate the associations of fatigue, dyspnea, post-exertional malaise, myalgia, and the co-occurrence of symptoms with movement behaviors and functional capacity in individuals with Long COVID.

In recent years, the integration of mobile health (m-Health) interventions has garnered increasing attention as a potential means to improve blood pressure (BP) management in adults. This updated systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to identify the effect of m-Health-based interventions on BP in adults and to evaluate the effect of m-Health on BP according to the characteristics of subjects, interventions, and countries. The search was carried out in PubMed, Embase, ResearchGate, and Cochrane databases in January 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) affects about 1% of people over 60 and can lead to significant non-motor issues, including radicular neuropathic pain, which can severely impact patients' lives.
  • A systematic review involving 36 low-bias studies found that the prevalence of radicular neuropathic pain in PD patients is 12.7%, with no significant differences based on diagnosis duration, medication dosage, or disease severity.
  • The study highlights a concerning underdiagnosis of this pain type in PD patients, indicating an urgent need for improved diagnostic methods and treatment strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 7,801 older adults examined the connection between fruit and vegetable consumption and the development of depression, finding that higher fruit intake was linked to a lower risk of depression.
  • Over a follow-up period of 3 to 9 years, 21% of participants developed depression, with fruit intake showing a significant protective effect, while vegetable intake did not show a notable association.
  • The authors noted limitations due to varied measurement methods and the relatively modest sample size, suggesting further research is needed on fruit and vegetable consumption in larger, more standardized studies among older adults in low- and middle-income countries.

Objective: To describe the process and epidemiological implications of georeferencing in EpiFloripa Aging samples (2009-2019).

Method: The EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study sought to investigate and monitor the living and health conditions of the older adult population (≥ 60) of Florianópolis in three study waves (2009/2010, 2013/2014, 2017/2019). With an automatic geocoding tool, the residential addresses were spatialized, allowing to investigate the effect of the georeferencing sample losses regarding 19 variables, evaluated in the three waves.

Background: Public open spaces (POS) can offer various resources to promote visitation and engagement in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, the influence of seasonal variations and specific meteorological conditions on this relationship remains unclear. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of seasonal variations and specific meteorological elements on different days of the week and times of day on POS use and POS-based MVPA in the Brazilian context.

Emotional self-regulation is a relevant factor for human development capable of minimizing emotional difficulties in the face of adverse events, as was particularly useful during the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to evaluate emotional self-regulation in Brazilian health science university students and its relationship with positive psychology constructs (subjective well-being, hope, optimism, spirituality, self-compassion, and self-efficacy) and psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress). This was a prospective, cross-sectional, observational, analytic study of 1062 Brazilian undergraduate students with data collected using self-administered online questionnaires.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 5A counseling model on physical activity levels in adults, using a systematic review of literature from multiple scientific databases up to May 2022.
  • Four relevant studies were analyzed, focusing on participants aged 40 to 55, mostly women; these studies combined counseling with additional strategies like action plans and text reminders, but only one showed significant improvement in daily steps.
  • The conclusion drawn was that while the 5A counseling model did not demonstrate strong evidence of improving physical activity, future research is encouraged to refine methods and strategies for better outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how Walk Score, which measures neighborhood walkability, correlates with older adults' commuting habits, physical activity levels, and screen time.
  • It used georeferenced addresses and various questionnaires to assess walking, physical activity, and screen time among participants.
  • Findings suggested that older adults in more walkable areas were more likely to walk for commuting and engage in physical activity, but also tended to spend more time in front of screens.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic remains ongoing, with a significant number of survivors who have experienced moderate to severe clinical conditions and who have suffered losses of great magnitude, especially in functional capacity, triggering limitations to daily autonomy and quality of life. Among the possibilities of intervention for disease rehabilitation, physical exercise training stands out, which can benefit several health outcomes and favours the adoption of healthier behaviours. Therefore, the aim of the study will be to analyse the effects of physical training on the functional, clinical, morphological, behavioural and psychosocial status in adults and the elderly following COVID-19 infection.
