Land use and cover changes lead to fragmentation of the natural habitats of sand flies and modify the epidemiological profile of leishmaniasis. This process contributes to the infestation of adjacent rural settlements by vector sand fly species with different degrees of adaptation, promoting leishmaniasis outbreaks. This study aimed to assess land use and cover changes over a 12-year period and investigate the diversity and abundance of sand fly assemblages in the rural area of Codó, Maranhão State, Brazil.

Otosclerosis leads to stapes fixation and consequent conductive hearing loss. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, and it can be achieved through small fenestra stapedotomy or stapedectomy. Despite the first being favored by most, evidence supporting its superiority over the latter remains inconclusive.

Article Synopsis
  • Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (LMNP) in Northeast Brazil is home to various sand fly species that can carry Leishmania, making it a region where leishmaniasis is common.
  • A seven-year study found that sand fly populations varied seasonally, with higher numbers observed from April to June, particularly for the species Lutzomyia longipalpis and Nyssomyia whitmani, which thrive in humid conditions.
  • Despite the presence of sand flies and potential leishmaniasis risk, no infected tourists have been reported, as most visits occur during the day when flies are inactive, though nighttime visits could increase exposure risk.

Although coronary angiography (CA) is the gold standard for coronary allograft vasculopathy (CAV) screening, non-invasive modalities have arisen as potential alternatives, such as coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). CCTA also quantifies plaque burden, which may influence medical treatment. From January 2021 to April 2022, we prospectively included heart transplant recipients who performed CCTA as a first-line method for CAV detection in a single center.

Anti-Hu antibodies are associated with autoimmune syndromes, mainly limbic encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, and painful sensory polyneuropathy (Denny-Brown). We report the case of a 15-year-old boy presenting with (EPC) found to have a right middle frontal gyrus brain lesion without atrophy or contralateral involvement. After partial resection, neuropathology revealed neuronal loss, reactive gliosis and astrocytosis, and perivascular mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate and features of neuronophagia resembling Rasmussen encephalitis.

This study investigates the impact of an exogenous and unexpected shock (COVID-19) on the wine tourism business from the winery's perspective. A sample of 146 Portuguese wineries was surveyed. The econometric results show that the share of wine tourism sales, the amount of dependence on exports and the assertiveness of brand recognition have a structural effect on direct-to-consumer tasting room wine sales, even when the winery's business is disrupted by a shock that degrades the dynamics and flows of international trade.

Antimicrobial resistance is presently one of the greatest threats to public health. The excessive and indiscriminate use of antibiotics imposes a continuous selective pressure that triggers the emergence of multi-drug resistance. We performed a large-scale analysis of closed bacterial genomes to identify multi-drug resistance considering the ResFinder antimicrobial classes.

Bacterial cells often suffer a fitness cost after conjugative plasmids' entry because these cells replicate slower than plasmid-free cells. Compensatory mutations may appear after tens of or a few hundred generations, reducing or eliminating this cost. A previous work based on a mathematical model and computer simulations has shown that plasmid-bearing cells already adapted to the plasmid may gain a fitness advantage when plasmids transfer into neighboring plasmid-free cells because these cells are still unadapted to the plasmid.

Introduction: Septoplasty is one of the most common surgeries performed by otorhinolaryngologists. The gold standard for the evaluation of septal deviation is anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy. Frequently, computed tomography (CT) is also performed, although the correlation between septal deviation on CT and physical examination is unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • * While bacteria often replicate slower after acquiring plasmids, theories suggest that donor cells adapted to these plasmids use them effectively to compete against non-adapted cells, which has been supported by computer simulations.
  • * This study indicates that donor cells still gain benefits from carrying conjugative plasmids despite potential mutations, as the cost of these plasmids can actually enhance their competitiveness against plasmid-free bacteria, challenging previous beliefs about the preservation of antibiotic effectiveness.

Biting midges of the genus Culicoides are small insects associated with the transmission of several pathogens, which requires the correct identification of the species, for implementation of effective strategies against these insects. However, many species are difficult to identify only by morphological characters. Therefore, the use of molecular methods can help in the taxonomy and systematics of this group.

This review discusses the fate of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes frequently present among microbiomes. A central concept in epidemiology is the mean number of hosts colonized by one infected host in a population of susceptible hosts: . It characterizes the disease's epidemic potential because the pathogen continues its propagation through susceptible hosts if it is above one.

Objective: Although there is growing evidence associating nonfunctioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAI) with cardiovascular risk factors, there are limited data whether NFAI and autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS) groups have similar or different clinical and metabolic features. The aim of this study is to compare cardiometabolic clinic parameters among patients with ACS and NFAI, as well as controls.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of leishmaniases, and contribute to the knowledge of their epidemiological dynamics from 2007 to 2017 in the municipality of Caxias, Maranhão, Northeast Brazil. Data on American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) and human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) were obtained in the Epidemiological Surveillance Sector of Caxias, while data on canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) were obtained in the Zoonoses Surveillance Unit. For data analysis and spatial representation of leishmaniasis cases, the geoprocessing of the data was performed, and the geometric features of the state of Maranhão, Caxias, and the disease registration sites were obtained from the shapefile database of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

A new genus of streblid bat fly with a postgenal ctenidium is erected and two new species from Brazil are described. We tested the phylogenetic position of the new genus using morphological data, through a cladistic analysis comparing it with eight genera of Trichobiinae and four of Streblinae. Our results showed the new genus is a sister group of Streblinae.

The COVID-19 crisis has severely impacted the wine industry, with producers in different countries affected differently and, therefore, differing in their perceptions toward it. These differing perceptions are assumed to be due to different business models, mainly linked to the distribution system adopted and resulting in varying distances of producers to distributors and consumers. While upstream integration characterizes the Old World, the New World applies a downstream business model, being more closely linked to distributors and consumers and, therefore, more vulnerable to shocks, which should lead to higher perceived impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.

Although pathogenic bacteria are the targets of antibiotics, these drugs also affect hundreds of commensal or mutualistic species. Moreover, the use of antibiotics is not only restricted to the treatment of infections but is also largely applied in agriculture and in prophylaxis. During this work, we tested the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the number and the genomic location of antibiotic resistance (AR) genes and virulence factor (VF) genes.

Leishmaniasis is a serious public health concern in the Northeastern region of Brazil, where the sand fly fauna is well studied, although few species have been identified as competent vectors. The detection of Leishmania spp. parasites in wild-caught sand flies could help sanitary authorities draw strategies to avoid the transmission of the parasites and, therefore, the incidence of leishmaniases.
