Background: Recently, the gene for cysteine-rich secretory protein 3 (CRISP-3) was reported to be highly upregulated in prostate cancer (PCa) compared to benign prostatic tissue. The current aims were to investigate diagnostic use of tissue expression and immunodetection in serum of CRISP-3 for detection or monitoring of PCa.

Methods: Radical prostatectomy specimens and tissue microarrays from transurethral resections and metastases were analyzed for CRISP-3 and PSA by immunohistochemistry.

Phenotypic modulation of smooth muscle is associated with various pathological conditions, including bladder dysfunction. Cytoskeletal dynamics modulate the cell phenotype and were recently shown to be involved in regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). We tested the hypothesis that the cell differentiation status affects iNOS expression, and that iNOS is preferentially expressed in immature dedifferentiated bladder smooth muscle cells (BSMC).

We investigated the possible involvement of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the effect of cytokines on neuromuscular function in isolated rat bladder strips. Bladder strips were incubated in cell culture medium for 24 h with or without tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)+interleukin-1beta. Mechanical activity in response to electrical field stimulation and carbachol was recorded in organ baths.

Purpose: We investigated the expression and activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and the localization of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in hypertrophied rat bladder. We also examined whether nitric oxide (NO) has a growth inhibitory effect in bladder smooth muscle cells.

Materials And Methods: The urethra was partly ligated and the bladder was removed 3 days, 3 or 6 weeks after obstruction.
