Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) can maintain bone health and repair through signaling pathways, revealing a new signaling mechanism regulated by epidermal growth factor (EGF).
  • - EGF activates β-catenin, a vital part of the Wnt signaling pathway, causing it to move to the nucleus, but does not affect Wnt target gene expression or T cell factor activity in MSCs.
  • - Using statistical analysis and RNA sequencing, the researchers found that EGF and β-catenin signaling work together to enhance MSC proliferation by relieving cell cycle pathway suppression from traditional EGF signaling.

Tissue and whole organ regeneration is a dramatic biological response to injury that occurs across different plant and animal phyla. It frequently requires the dedifferentiation of mature cells to a condensed mesenchymal blastema, from which replacement tissues develop. Human somatic cells cannot regenerate in this way and differentiation is considered irreversible under normal developmental conditions.
