Taking the pressure off type 2 diabetes mellitus: implementing hypertension guidelines.

Successful treatment of hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus increases life expectancy and reduces the risk of many of the complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke, and retinopathy. Controlling blood pressure also protects against advancing renal disease, with several recent studies having clearly shown the advantage of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers in slowing the progression of renal disease. Here, the authors review current guidelines for the management of hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and explore ways in which nurse practitioners can improve care for these patients.

Transdermal clonidine: therapeutic considerations.

Transdermal clonidine was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1984 for the treatment of mild-to-moderate hypertension alone or in combination with a diuretic. Clonidine is released from the patch at a constant rate and thus displays a pharmacokinetic pattern not dissimilar to that of infusion therapy. Transdermal clonidine, like oral clonidine, is effective first- or second-line therapy for most forms of hypertension.

Health disparities in practice and research for aging women with cancer.

The purpose of this article is to examine health needs as well as disparities in practice and research pertaining to aging women with cancer. Given the increasing number of aging women with cancer and the concomitant challenges in survivorship, caregivers need research and improved clinical care to identify needs and enhance cancer survivors' quality of life. The authors use inner strength as a theoretical framework to discuss examples of practice and strategies to improve health outcomes and assess health needs in aging women with cancer.
