While research on the determinants of conspiracy beliefs has been growing, there is still limited attention given to the broader consequences of conspiracy theories. This study examines the effects of conspiratorial framing on outgroup evaluations in the context of societal crises. Using an experimental design and a large representative sample of the German population, we exposed participants to conspiratorial framings of health, economic, and security crisis scenarios.

In the course of the COVID-19-pandemic, groups that present themselves as anchors in problem solving and provide supposed solutions for dealing with insecurities are becoming increasingly visible. There seems to be a tendency for conspiracy belief and esoteric attitudes, which are increasingly being expressed in the protests against measures to contain the pandemic. This raises the question of the role of religious affiliations and spiritual worldviews within such groups.
