Aim: This study aimed to assess and compare outcomes of robotic inguinal hernia repair (RIHR) in patients under and over 70 years old, performed by a fellowship-trained robotic surgeon at a single institution.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing robotic primary transabdominal preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair between 2020 and 2022 was conducted. Patients were categorized into two age groups: those under 70 years and 70 years and older.

The sleeve gastrectomy (SG) often requires conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) due to gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). Many postbariatric patients seek body-contouring surgery such as abdominoplasty to remove unwanted skin and fat. Although the number of abdominoplasties performed in postbariatric patients is increasing each year, the number of conversion surgeries is increasing in accordance.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the early and late postoperative outcomes of different surgical approaches for unilateral groin hernia repair, including robotic, laparoscopic, and open techniques, using a nationwide database.
  • Data from 14,320 patients who underwent these procedures between 2015 and 2022 were analyzed, focusing on demographics and outcomes after matching groups for balanced comparison.
  • Key findings reveal differences in patient demographics, with open repairs typically involving older patients and longer operating room times for robotic procedures, alongside a high prevalence of painful bulge as the primary indication for surgery.

Resident participation in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgeries is controversial. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety of resident participation in robotic and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Prospectively maintained institutional Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program database was used to identify patients who underwent SG, which was performed at our institution between January, 2018, and December, 2021.

Paraesophageal hernias readily affect the elderly with a median age of presentation between 65 and 75 years. Laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair (PEHR) is a technically challenging operation with potential for dire complications. Advanced age and medical comorbidities may heighten perioperative risk and limit surgical candidacy, potentially refusing patients an opportunity toward symptom resolution.

Introduction: Magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) offers a minimally invasive anti-reflux alternative to fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease. The most common side effect of MSA is dysphagia, which may require dilation or even device removal. The incidence of dysphagia may be reduced by MSA sizing and preoperative motility studies.

Introduction: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) are commonly performed bariatric procedures in obesity management. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in this population has reported rates of 23-100%. GERD after LSG has been noted with recent studies demonstrating de novo reflux or symptom exacerbation despite weight loss.
