The larva of codling moth Cydia pomonella (Tortricidae, Lepidoptera) is known as the worm in the apple, mining the fruit for food. We here show that codling moth larvae are closely associated with yeasts of the genus Metschnikowia. Yeast is an essential part of the larval diet and further promotes larval survival by reducing the incidence of fungal infestations in the apple.

Nutritional selenium deficiency is associated with Keshan disease in humans and white muscle disease in ruminant livestock. In this study, mice were fed a selenium-deficient diet for three generations. Female mice from the third depleted generation of these mice were given water containing either no added selenium or 0.

SeW promoter activity was assayed in two rat cell lines: L8 muscle cells and C6 brain cells.

Two oncogenes encode enzymes that convert tryptophan to indole-3-acetic acid (auxin): iaaM (tryptophan mono-oxygenase) and iaaH (indole-3-acetamide hydrolase). A third oncogene (ipt) encodes AMP isopentenyl transferase, which produces cytokinin (isopentenyl-AMP).

The human selenoprotein W coding region with the selenocysteine codon (TGA) changed to a cysteine codon (TGT) was fused to six histidine codons (at its 3' end), cloned into a prokaryotic expression vector (pTrc99a), and the corresponding mutated selenoprotein W was expressed in bacteria. The protein was purified by Ni-NTA agarose column and reverse phase HPLC. Polyclonal antibodies raised against this protein were used in Western blots to determine tissue distribution of selenoprotein W from rhesus monkeys fed a commercial chow.

Theoretical translation of the coding sequences indicated highly similar proteins of 88 (mouse and rat) or 87 (human, monkey and sheep) amino acids. In 73 of 88 positions the specified amino acids are identical for all five proteins.

Thus, three border repeats lie right and one lies left of TL, which carries the genes needed for tumor maintenance. To determine whether T-DNA transfer and integration (subsequently called T-DNA transmission) require sequences in addition to the 23-bp border repeat, we constructed a deletion removing the three potential TL right borders (the TL right border and both TR borders).

Placental lesions similar to those in pregnant hypertensive women were absent in both strains; however, other abnormalities were noted. Hemorrhage at the lateral edges of the decidua basalis appeared to be more extensive in the SHR than WKY at 15 days.

During the first 2 periods, they took no pain relievers whatsoever; during their last 2 periods they took 2 X 325 mg aspirin, acetaminophen or an identically packaged placebo every 4 h to total 8 tablets during the first 24 h of their periods beginning with spotting. For statistical analysis, periods 1 and 2 were combined and averaged, then compared with periods 3 and 4 combined and averaged.

The analysis shows a potentially translatable reading frame of 1071 nucleotides, which is interrupted by all six insertions.

Returned packages were then reweighed to determine total menstrual loss. No subject used all the supplies in her package; therefore, packages contents were deemed ample.

Observations with the scanning electron microscope revealed that the venous endothelial cells were relatively flat, giving the luminal surface of the vein a smooth appearance. The nuclear region of the fusiform arterial endothelial cells was responsible for the bumpy appearance of the luminal surface of the artery.

Drugs were administered during a 4-month study according to a double-blind format. During the first 2 months, subjects ingested no drugs whatsoever during their menstrual periods.

50 subjects participated in a 4-month study of the effects of an antihistamine on total menstrual loss. During the first 2 periods, no drugs were given; during the last 2 periods, an antihistamine or a placebo was administered according to a double-blind format. The menstrual weights of the first 2 months were averaged and compared with averages from the last 2 months combined.

Three genetic loci affecting tumor morphology lie within pTiA6NC T-DNA: tms, tmr, and tml. Using deletions and multiple transposon insertions, we constructed tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmids representing every possible double and triple mutant combination. tms tmr and tms tmr tml mutants did not incite tumors on most plants and produced a very weak response on a few other hosts but tms tml and tmr tml mutants were virulent.

Under the conditions of the experimental procedure, no pathological changes were seen in the femurs as a result of maternal ingestion of fluoride. These results indicate that the amount of fluoride crossing the placenta and mammary gland was insufficient to produce significant morphological changes in the bones of 3-week-old rats.

Uteri of 10 animals had retained one or more placentas, each of which was firmly attached to the uterus and usually exhibited fetal membranes and an umbilical cord. Histologic preparations revealed that the fetal blood channels in the labyrinth region were collapsed and fibrosed while some maternal blood channels were open and contained blood cells.

The parathyroid glands of rats given 150 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for 10 weeks are evaluated ultrastructurally and compared to the parathyroid glands of untreated rats. As a result of fluoride ingestion, the majority of the parathyroid cells are dark chief cells, indicating that these cells are in the active stages of the secretory cycle. More significantly, in the fluoride-treated rats, the cytoplasmic organelles of the dark chief cells are even more developed that those seen in the dark chief cells of untreated rats.
