A Virus-Packageable CRISPR System Identifies Host Dependency Factors Co-Opted by Multiple HIV-1 Strains.

At each stage of the HIV life cycle, host cellular proteins are hijacked by the virus to establish and enhance infection. We adapted the virus packageable HIV-CRISPR screening technology at a genome-wide scale to comprehensively identify host factors that affect HIV replication in a human T cell line. Using a smaller, targeted HIV Dependency Factor (HIVDEP) sublibrary, we then performed screens across HIV strains representing different clades and with different biological properties to define which T cell host factors are important across multiple HIV strains.

Trend changes of national zolpidem users and exposure cases after FDA drug safety communications.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of FDA's 2013 zolpidem Drug Safety Communications (DSCs), which recommended lowering the initial dose to mitigate drowsiness, on national estimates of zolpidem users and zolpidem exposure cases.

Methods: We analyzed trend changes of national zolpidem users from the IQVIA Total Patient Tracker (TPT) and zolpidem exposure cases reported to the National Poison Data System (NPDS), 2009-2018. To control for time varying confounding, the adjusted trends were analyzed using simple and controlled interrupted time series (ITS).

Supporting families struggling with food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic: An innovative cross-sector collaboration.

Food insecurity is an ongoing and persistent problem for many individuals and families in the United States and in New York City. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the scope of the problem and data show that food insecurity rates have increased almost three times over pre-COVID rates. In addition, with unemployment increasing daily and the closure of safety net programs and services, there became a need for creatively attending to the basic needs of individuals and families.

Music as language.

This article is an inquiry into the potential role of music in helping to address and to articulate complex emotional states such as the feelings patients might experience during the process of an illness or while undergoing bereavement. The article is centered on the role music played in structuring and articulating the cancer treatment experience of my infant nephew. What is woven around that central core is a synthesis and analysis of various philosophical perspectives, autobiographical vignettes, and empirical research.

Combinatorial materials research applied to the development of new surface coatings I: a multiwell plate screening method for the high-throughput assessment of bacterial biofilm retention on surfaces.

Combinatorial, high-throughput capabilities have been established to aid in the rapid development of new and effective antifouling marine coatings for naval applications. A biological screening process involving marine bacteria was developed that allows for rapid and effective quantification of bacterial biofilm growth and retention on large numbers of coating surfaces in parallel. The screening process involves (1) multiwell plate modifications for coating deposition, (2) deposition of combinatorial coating libraries via an automated liquid dispensing robot, (3) coating thickness measurements of cured coatings, (4) preconditioning of coatings via immersion in deionized water, (5) bacterial incubation, (6) plate processing, and (7) data analysis for identification of promising candidates.
