Standard serological tests have reached high levels of sensitivity and reproducibility but do not indicate whether infection is recent or long-standing. Among the 59960 sera analyzed for HIV positivity at the Retrovirus Laboratory, Operative Unit of Microbiology, Bologna, Italy, from January 2010 to July 2011, 134 samples showed an initial positive result. Application of the avidity test, able to distinguish between recent or long-standing HIV infection, classified 59 subjects as recently infected and 75 as chronically infected.

This pharmacological approach has dramatically increased the life expectancy of HIV-positive subjects transforming HIV infection into a chronic disease. Notwithstanding this major improvement in HIV disease management, several HIV-positive patients show an earlier and significant onset of aging related chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and neoplasias with respect to uninfected individuals.

Unfortunately, genes involved in cancer are not always detectable using only expression signatures or co-expressed sets of genes, and in principle other types of functional interactions should be exploited to obtain a comprehensive picture of the molecular mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of cancer.
Results: We propose a novel semi-supervised method to rank genes with respect to CMs using networks constructed from different sources of functional information, not limited to gene expression data.
The use of inhaled nitric oxide in patients with traumatic brain injury, intracranial hypertension, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has been reported in an intensive care unit setting only in a few case reports. The use of the prone position for patients with traumatic brain injury and lung impairment has been reported only in selected cases. Here we report our experience with the use of both inhaled nitric oxide and the prone position together in the operating room in a patient with head injury and ARDS who underwent column stabilization.

We investigated the effect of combination of salbutamol and PPARγ agonists on growth factor-stimulated human bronchial smooth muscle cell (BSMC) proliferation.
Experimental Approach: Synergism was quantified by the combination index-isobologram method.

Loaded microspheres with a silicon (IV) phthalocyanine derivative (NzPC) acting as a photosensitizer were prepared from polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBHV) and poly(ecaprolactone) (PCL) polymers using the emulsification solvent evaporation method (EE). The aim of our study was to prepare two systems of these biodegradable PHBHV/PCL microspheres. The first one containing only photosensitizer previously incorporated in the PHBHV and poly(ecaprolactone) (PCL) microspheres and the second one with the post magnetization of the DDS with magnetic nanoparticles.

Background: Asthma is a complex multifactorial disease that is not yet fully understood. Oxidative stress due to an imbalance between the oxidative forces and the antioxidant defense systems has been implicated in asthma pathogenesis. However, much debate still surrounds the key genetic factors involved in the development of this disease.

Dried blood spots (DBSs) are a useful alternative to blood sampling especially in children or for screening high-risk populations in developing countries. DBS blood collection can be employed in the diagnosis of viral infections by PCR or RT-PCR and also in viral genome sequencing. In addition, the advent of multiplex PCR approaches has led to further diagnostic and methodological improvements allowing simultaneous detection of two or more different viral genomes in the same sample and amplification reaction.

Nasal dermoid sinus cysts are the most common congenital midline nasal lesions. The frequency of intracranial extensions varies from 5% to 45%. Complete surgical excision of nasal dermoid cyst and any associated sinus tract is essential for cure and any residual ectodermal elements result in a high rate of recurrence and complicated infections.

Pituitary adenomas are a diverse group of tumors arising from the pituitary gland. Typically, they are small, slow-growing, hormonally inactive lesions that come to light as incidental findings on radiologic or postmortem examinations, although some small, slow-growing lesions with excessive hormonal activity may manifest with a clinical syndrome. The family of neurotrophins plays a key role in the development and maintenance of the pituitary endocrine cell function and in the regulation of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA reduction of sleep time has become common over the last century, and growing evidence from both epidemiological and laboratory-based studies suggests sleep curtailment is a new risk factor for the development of obesity. On this basis, the present review examines the role of sleep curtailment in the metabolic and endocrine alterations, including decreased glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, increased evening concentrations of cortisol, increased levels of ghrelin, decreased levels of leptin and increased hunger and appetite. It will be discussed how sleep restriction may lead to increase in food intake and result in greater fatigue, which may favour decreased energy expenditure.

Mitochondrial ribosomes and translation factors co-purify with mitochondrial nucleoids of human cells, based on affinity protein purification of tagged mitochondrial DNA binding proteins. Among the most frequently identified proteins were ATAD3 and prohibitin, which have been identified previously as nucleoid components, using a variety of methods. Both proteins are demonstrated to be required for mitochondrial protein synthesis in human cultured cells, and the major binding partner of ATAD3 is the mitochondrial ribosome.

Here, recombinant C4orf14 isolated from human cells, co-purified with the small, 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome and the endogenous protein co-fractionated with the 28S subunit in sucrose gradients. Gene silencing of C4orf14 specifically affected components of the small subunit, leading to decreased protein synthesis in the organelle.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSF) stimulate the proliferation and survival of neutrophils and their precursors, thereby reducing the incidence, duration and severity of neutropenic events across a broad range of malignancies and regimens, often enabling the delivery of full chemotherapy dose intensity.
Areas Covered: In this review, areas covered include the physiologic role of G-CSF in granulopoiesis, as well as a related biological model of bone marrow kinetics after chemotherapy.
Purpose: Anterior decompression of the craniovertebral junction is reserved to patients with irreducible ventral bulbo-medullary lesions and rapidly deteriorating neurological functions. Classically performed through the transoral approach, the exposure of this region can be now achieved by a minimally invasive endonasal endoscopic approach (EEA).
Methods: Four patients with irreducible, anterior bulbo-medullary compression due to rheumatoid pannus and basilar invagination were enrolled.
Objective: The DIVA study is aimed at setting up a standardized genotypic tropism-testing on proviral-DNA for the routine clinical diagnostic-laboratory.
Methods: Twelve local centres and 5 reference centres (previously cross-validated) were identified. For inter-center validation-procedure, 60 peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) aliquots from 45 HAART-treated patients were randomly chosen for population V3 sequencing on proviral-DNA at local HIV centre and at reference-laboratory.
Background: Increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis have been associated with the use of antiretroviral drugs. There is a paucity of prospective evaluations of bone markers after the initiation of drugs currently recommended to treat HIV infection and results on the evolution of these markers are conflicting. Lastly, the effect of tenofovir on 1,25-(OH)₂ vitamin D is uncertain.

Some authors have explored the role of genetic variability of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes in EH risk with contrasting results. In particular, our previous study investigated two GSTO common polymorphisms, but we did not find a significant outcome.
