Background: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) matching is gradually being omitted from clinical practice in evaluation for renal allograft transplant. While such practices may yield shorter wait times and adequate short-term outcomes, graft longevity in HLA mismatched patients remains unclear. This study aims to demonstrate that HLA matching may still play an important role in long-term graft survival.

A 29-year-old man with chronic portal venous thrombosis resulting in portal biliopathy required stenting of his common bile duct (CBD) and underwent a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure to decrease portal pressures. He later presented with abdominal pain in the setting of prolonged CBD stent placement and was found to have air within his TIPS stent with a fistula on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography between his fully covered CBD stent and bare metal TIPS stent. There was concern that further intervention would lead to an air embolus.

Upconversion of near infrared (NIR) into ultraviolet (UV) radiation could lead to a number of applications in bio-imaging, diagnostics and drug delivery. However, for bare nanoparticles, the conversion efficiency is extremely low. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate strongly enhanced upconversion emission from an ensemble of β-NaYF:Gd/Yb/Tm @NaLuF core-shell nanoparticles trapped in judiciously designed plasmonic nanocavities.

Objectives: Various agents are currently available for treatment of hypersensitive dentine, however, their resistance to erosion intraorally by various erosive drinks is still questionable. The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of a hydroxyapatite paste to decrease dentine permeability and resist an erosion challenge.

Methods: Hydroxyapatite powder was mixed with 25% phosphoric acid to form a paste which was applied on dentine having patent dentinal tubules orifices (treated with EDTA, 2 min) and the resulting layer formed on top of dentine was irradiated by Nd:YAG laser.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important mediators for VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) signalling involved in angiogenesis. The initial product of Cys oxidation, cysteine sulfenic acid (Cys-OH), is a key intermediate in redox signal transduction; however, its role in VEGF signalling is unknown. We have previously demonstrated IQGAP1 as a VEGFR2 binding scaffold protein involved in ROS-dependent EC migration and post-ischemic angiogenesis.

Uncharacterized open reading frames (ORFs) in human genomic sequence often show a high degree of evolutionary conservation, yet have little or no tissue EST or protein data suggestive of protein product function. The encoded proteins may have highly restricted expression in specialized cells, subcellular specializations, and/or narrow windows during development. One such highly specialized and minute subcellular compartment is the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), where motorneurons contact muscle fibers.

Background: Neovascularization is an important repair mechanism in response to ischemic injury and is dependent on inflammation, angiogenesis and reactive oxygen species (ROS). IQGAP1, an actin-binding scaffold protein, is a key regulator for actin cytoskeleton and motility. We previously demonstrated that IQGAP1 mediates vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced ROS production and migration of cultured endothelial cells (ECs); however, its role in post-ischemic neovascularization is unknown.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), in particular, H(2)O(2), is essential for full activation of VEGF receptor2 (VEGFR2) signaling involved in endothelial cell (EC) proliferation and migration. Extracellular superoxide dismutase (ecSOD) is a major secreted extracellular enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide to H(2)O(2), and anchors to EC surface through heparin-binding domain (HBD). Mice lacking ecSOD show impaired postnatal angiogenesis.

Bone marrow (BM) is the major reservoir for endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Postnatal neovascularization depends on not only angiogenesis but also vasculogenesis, which is mediated through mobilization of EPCs from BM and their recruitment to the ischemic sites. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from Nox2-based NADPH oxidase play an important role in postnatal neovascularization; however, their role in BM and EPC function is unknown.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) binding induces phosphorylation of VEGF receptor (VEGFR)2 in tyrosine, which is followed by disruption of VE-cadherin-mediated cell-cell contacts of endothelial cells (ECs), thereby stimulating EC proliferation and migration to promote angiogenesis. Tyrosine phosphorylation events are controlled by the balance of activation of protein tyrosine kinases and protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). Little is known about the role of endogenous PTPs in VEGF signaling in ECs.
