Background: With the growing incidence of breast cancer, efficient and correct staging is essential for further treatment decisions. Axillary ultrasound (US) remains the most common method for regional nodal involvement assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether high-risk US features can accurately predict axillary lymph node metastasis.

p16÷Ki-67 dual-stained cytology, either alone or combined with human papillomavirus (HPV) 16÷18 genotyping, could be a useful tool for triage for colposcopy of HPV-positive patients. Based on this background, we aimed at comparing the diagnostic performance of the p16÷Ki-67 dual staining test, and high-risk HPV test for the detection of high-risk cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2÷3) in patients diagnosed with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) on Pap smear. We performed a retrospective study including 184 patients with LSIL cytology on Pap smear, of which 64 were referred for biopsy after colposcopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer remains a significant health issue despite screening programs, with cervical cytology being the most common method used.
  • HPV genotyping has gained popularity but suffers from low specificity in young women who test HPV-positive without disease potential, indicating a need for improved screening strategies.
  • Recent research suggests that combining immunocytochemistry techniques, specifically dual staining with p16INK4a and Ki-67, may enhance screening accuracy and better predict high-grade dysplasia risk.
