Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. Lignosus rhinocerus (Cooke) Ryvarden (also known as tiger milk mushroom), has been reported to exhibit a range of pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, antioxidative, immunomodulatory and anti-asthmatic activities. Thus far, there is limited research that has explored its ability to mediate vascular effects in vivo.

This study combines structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) of predefined compound libraries, pharmacokinetic prediction (ADME/T) and in vitro evaluation to identify potential low molecular weight (<500 Dalton) inhibitors of the NS3/4A serine protease (GT3).

The Prevalence of Hearing Loss Among Babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a Tertiary Hospital in Malaysia.

Objective: To study the prevalence of hearing loss (HL) and to identify the possible risk factors causing HL.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted from January 2014-December 2016 at a tertiary hospital in Malaysia. All neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) were screened with a two-step protocol using an automated auditory brain response (AABR) and/or Otoacoustic Emission and auditory brain response (ABR).

Leptin and soluble leptin receptor in association with gestational diabetes: a prospective case-control study.

Purpose: To assess the association of serum leptin and its receptor (SLeptinR) with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and to evaluate the longitudinal circulation of these peptides in pregnancy.

Subversion of immunoproteasome subunit expression in dengue virus serotype 2-infected HepG2 cells.

Introduction:: Infection with all serotypes of dengue virus (DV) results in augmented antigen presentation by MHC class I molecules. However, the upregulation of immunoproteasome subunits only results from infection with two serotypes. This study aims to elucidate changes in the expression of immunoproteasome subunits resulting from infection with DV, particularly DV serotype 2 (DV2).

Altered circulating concentrations of active glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) in obese subjects and their association with insulin resistance.

Objectives: Soluble DPP4 (sDPP4) is a novel adipokine that degrades glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1). We evaluated the fasting serum levels of active GLP-1 and sDPP4 in obese, overweight and normal weight subjects to assess the association between sDPP4 levels, active GLP-1 levels and insulin resistance in obese subjects.

Methods: The study involved 235 Malaysian subjects who were randomly selected (66 normal weight subjects, 97 overweight, 59 obese subjects, and 13 subjects who were underweight).

An artificial PPR scaffold for programmable RNA recognition.

Pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins control diverse aspects of RNA metabolism in eukaryotic cells. Although recent computational and structural studies have provided insights into RNA recognition by PPR proteins, their highly insoluble nature and inconsistencies between predicted and observed modes of RNA binding have restricted our understanding of their biological functions and their use as tools. Here we use a consensus design strategy to create artificial PPR domains that are structurally robust and can be programmed for sequence-specific RNA binding.

MRPS27 is a pentatricopeptide repeat domain protein required for the translation of mitochondrially encoded proteins.

Mammalian pentatricopeptide repeat domain (PPR) proteins are involved in regulation of mitochondrial RNA metabolism and translation and are required for mitochondrial function. We investigated an uncharacterised PPR protein, the supernumerary mitochondrial ribosomal protein of the small subunit 27 (MRPS27), and show that it associates with the 12S rRNA and tRNA(Glu), however it does not affect their abundance. We found that MRPS27 is not required for mitochondrial RNA processing or the stability of the small ribosomal subunit.

Our previous neurocognitive studies of schizophrenia outlined two clusters of affected subjects--cognitively spared (CS) and cognitive deficit (CD), the latter's characteristics pointing to developmental origins and impaired synaptic plasticity. Here we investigate the contribution of polymorphisms in major regulators of these processes to susceptibility to schizophrenia and to CD in patients. We examine variation in genes encoding proteins at the gateway of Reelin signaling: ligands RELN and APOE, their common receptors APOER2 and VLDLR, and adaptor DAB1.

Effects of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty: a seven year review.

To review the long term outcome of Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome in a tertiary referral centre. 38 records were traced where UPPP was done from July 2000 to December 2007. 14 patients were followed up for one to seven years where the Epworth sleepiness scale was scored, long term side effects documented and post operative muller's manoeuvre done.

A universal code for RNA recognition by PUF proteins.

The design of proteins that can bind any RNA sequence of interest has many potential biological and medical applications. Here we have expanded the recognition of Pumilio and FBF homology protein (PUF) repeats beyond adenine, guanine and uracil and evolved them to specifically bind cytosine. These repeat sequences can be used to create PUF domains capable of selectively binding RNA targets of diverse sequence and structure.

Complete congenital third branchial fistula: does the theoretical course apply?

The course of a third branchial fistula is derived from its embryological origin, in accordance with the branchial apparatus theory. Treatment of this condition requires complete removal of the tract in order to avoid recurrence; however, this can pose a risk to the surrounding structures. We report the case of a complete third branchial fistula as well as a literature review on its theoretical course and management.

Synovial sarcoma: a rare presentation of parapharyngeal mass.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma of the head and neck region involving the parapharyngeal space. The diagnosis of synovial sarcoma can be very challenging to the pathologists. We present a rare case of parapharyngeal synovial sarcoma in a young female patient who had a two-month history of left cervical intumescent mass at level II.

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma of the parotid gland.

Objectives: To highlight the first reported case of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma of the parotid gland. We also review the clinical presentations and treatments for this rare condition.

Case of a non-pulsatile groin swelling.

We report a case of a non-pulsatile groin swelling in a 38 years old male drug addict without the typical clinical signs of an aneurysm. Ultrasound revealed a left femoral artery pseudo-aneurysm. He was surgically treated and the vessels were ligated without revascularisation.

Anterior shoulder dislocation with axillary artery and nerve injury.

We report a rare case of left axillary artery injury associated with anterior dislocation of the left shoulder in a 25 yrs old male as a result of a road traffic accident. The shoulder dislocation was reduced. A left upper limb angiogram showed an obstructed left axillary artery.

Delayed decompression of chronic C1C2 subluxation in a pediatric patient with tetraplegia--is recovery possible?

A 2 year-old Malay girl was admitted to our institution with a chesty cough and breathlessness but later found to have a chronic C1/C2 subluxation for one and half year with tetraplegia. Her cervical cord was decompressed and occipito-cervical fusion performed. Her neurological status improved significantly post-operatively and is able to care for her personal hygiene.
