An accurate epileptic seizure detector using intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings, suitable for low-power wearable/implantable applications, is presented. Eleven time-domain features with low hardware complexity are employed in the feature pool of the seizure detector. A novel two-step feature ranking algorithm based on maximum discrimination minimum redundancy (MDMR) is proposed to identify the most discriminating features in a patient-specific manner during a training phase.

A novel low-complexity method of detecting epileptic seizures from intracranial encephalography (iEEG) signals is presented. In the proposed algorithm, coastline, energy and nonlinear energy features of iEEG signals are extracted in a patient-specific two-stage seizure detection system. The detection stage of the proposed system, which extracts two times more features than the monitoring stage, is only powered on when the monitoring stage detects a seizure occurrence.

A mesenteric cyst is rare intra-abdominal pathology, with little literature to guide us on how to diagnose and manage it. We report the incident of a 57-year-old female who had an incidental finding of a sigmoid mesenteric cyst whilst undergoing an operation under the care of the Gynaecologists. A computed tomography scan and a flexible sigmoidoscopy followed to help diagnose the lesion as a cyst.

Morgagni hernias are a rare form of congenital diaphragmatic hernias, thus there is paucity in literature about the diagnosis and management of the condition. We report an 83-year-old woman who presented with vomiting and a metabolic acidosis with a previous computed tomography diagnosis of Bochdalek's hernia. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a Morgagni hernia containing transverse colon, greater curvature of the stomach and a partial gastric volvulus.

Objective: Some genome-wide scans and association studies for schizophrenia susceptibility genes have yielded significant positive findings, but there is disagreement between studies on their locations, and no mutation has yet been found in any gene. Since schizophrenia is a complex disorder, a study with sufficient power to detect a locus with a small or moderate gene effect is necessary.

Method: In a genome-wide scan of 382 sibling pairs with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, 396 highly polymorphic markers spaced approximately 10 centimorgans apart throughout the genome were genotyped in all individuals.

Sixty-six families from Costa Rica with multiply ill sets of siblings were examined in detailed clinical evaluations and compared with 59 similarly evaluated families from the USA. Eighty-six unrelated Costa Rican individuals with a schizophrenia spectrum diagnosis and no other ill siblings were an additional comparison group. This study was undertaken to examine whether schizophrenia in Costa Rica has similar clinical and demographic characteristics to that in the USA, whether a homogeneous population such as that in Costa Rica might harbor a specific definable subtype, and whether singletons have similar or differing characteristics from individuals in multiplex families.
