Coastal aquifer overexploitation represents a concerning trigger for water salinization around the world and especially in arid and semi-arid regions along with urban growth and urbanization, as well as land use human-induced changes. This study aims to assess the groundwater quality in the Mitidja alluvial aquifer (northern Algeria) along with its suitability for domestic and agricultural utilizations. A hydrogeochemical approach, based on the interpretation of groundwater physiochemical parameters (EC, pH, dry residue, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, SO, HCO, and NO) collected during the wet and dry periods for the years 2005 and 2017 along with an isotopic characterization, including stable isotopes to identify the recharge sources for the samples collected in October 2017, has been proposed.

Leptin is an adipocytokine that consists of 167 amino acids. It functions as a regulator of hunger and energy expenditure. Leptin loses its ability to carry out its physiological function at high serum levels, and many studies have associated this loss of function with the development of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Migraine is a common neurological disorder associated with or without aura. Although the pathophysiology of migraine is not very well understood, pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress biomarkers are found to be increased in migraine. Multiple studies have been done to see if alternative medicine such as herbal supplements and nutraceuticals are effective in the prevention and treatment of migraine headaches.

To better understand selenium's dynamics in environmental systems, the present study aims to investigate selenium speciation and distribution in black argillaceous sediments, partially fulfilling karstic cavities into the Hydrogeological Experimental Site of Poitiers. These sediments are suspected to be responsible for selenium concentrations exceeding the European Framework Directive's drinking water limit value (10 μg L(-1)) in some specific wells. A combination of a sequential extractions scheme and single parallel extractions was thus applied on a representative argillaceous sample.

The medical records of 125 patients benign parotid neoplasms surgically treated over a 24-year period were retrospectively reviewed; 128 tumors were excised. These included 90 pleomorphic adenomas, 33 Warthin's tumors, 3 benign lymphoepitheliomas, and 2 oncocytomas. The surgical procedures consisted of 2 local excisions, 6 enucleations, 88 superficial parotidectomies, 13 subtotal parotidectomies, and 3 radical parotidectomies.

One hundred twenty-eight patients with T3 or T4 glottic cancers were treated by initial surgery; 59 had a total laryngectomy and 69 had total laryngectomy with regional node dissection. Fifty-eight percent of the total laryngectomy group and forty-nine percent of the total laryngectomy with neck dissection group remained free of disease for 5 or more years. Forty-seven percent (60 of 128 patients) treated surgically developed regional recurrences requiring further treatment.

Treatment failure and survival in 209 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth treated with surgery as the single curative modality are reported. Fifty percent of the patients had stage III and IV disease. The primary tumor was excised with 1 to 2 cm margins and the mandible was resected in 73 percent of the patients; 77 percent underwent radical neck dissection.

Recurrent salivary gland malignancies present difficult therapeutic decisions and poor prognosis in many instances, and treatment becomes of a palliative nature only. As many of the salivary gland malignancies we see are of the recurrent type, the following study was done to determine the efficacy of a vigorous attempt at retreatment. During the period January 1, 1960, through December 31, 1984, 352 patients with major and minor salivary gland tumors were evaluated at our institution.

A retrospective review of 832 patients with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck between 1961 and 1985 was carried out to determine the incidence of multiple primary cancers (MPC) at the time of autopsy and the number who died of the second cancer. The overall risk of developing a second MPC of the head and neck, lung, or esophagus from treatment of first head and neck cancer to time of autopsy was 4.04% per year.

A phase I trial of human recombinant tumor necrosis factor (rH-TNF) has been carried out in patients with advanced solid tumors. Sixty-six courses of the drug were given by 1 h IV infusion, daily for 5 days to 33 patients at doses of 5, 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, and 80 x 10(4) U/m2/day. All patients received isotonic saline (up to 21/day) and either indomethacin or ketoprofen.

A 25-year retrospective study of 143 early (T1 and T2 N0) glottic cancer, patients was done to determine the recurrence rate following initial radiation therapy, the surgical salvage rate, and incidence of cervical lymph node metastases. Radiation therapy gave a 5-year cure rate of 78% for stage I and 57% for stage II. Total laryngectomy for recurrent squamous cell carcinoma had a 5-year salvage rate of 66% for stage I and 61% for stage II recurrent tumors.

This is a prospective, randomized study of 431 patients with palpable thyroid nodules who had previous radiotherapy for benign disorders of the head and neck area to determine the response of the thyroid nodules to suppressive therapy and the incidence of thyroid cancer in patients who could not be suppressed and had surgery. A complete response was achieved within 6 months in 18.3 percent of the patients, and in an additional 26 percent of patients between 7 and 12 months postoperatively.

The nose is the most common site of skin cancer on the human body. This review was compiled to enumerate the many reconstructive techniques which are available and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Five hundred twenty-one patients with nasal cancer were treated at Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1964 to 1981.

In order to define the clinical behavior and characteristics of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cancer in nontobacco users, 40 surgically treated American Joint Commission (AJC) stage I and II tumors in 36 nontobacco-using patients were retrosepctively compared with 306 similarly staged and treated tumors in 286 tobacco-using patients. Significantly more nontobacco-associated tumors were found in females (P less than 0.005) whose mean age was significantly greater than that of tobacco users (P less than 0.

This retrospective study on 832 head and neck cancer patients who died between 1961 and 1985 was carried out to determine the incidence and sites of distant metastases. All patients were staged prior to definitive treatment and were autopsied. The overall incidence of distant metastases was 47 percent.

From January 1958 through December 1983, 56 modified radical neck dissections were performed on 47 patients with metastases to the cervical nodes from differentiated carcinomas of the thyroid. In nine patients, a second modified radical neck dissection was performed either simultaneously or at a later date. Lymph node clearance was performed on all but one surgical specimen.

Histologic specimens from 43 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth treated exclusively by surgery were studied with special attention paid to the reactivity of regional lymph nodes. The lymph nodes were classified into four microscopic patterns of immune response: lymphocyte predominance for sinus histiocytosis, germinal center predominance, unstimulated, and lymphocyte depletion. No nodes of the lymphocyte depletion pattern were found.
