Objective: Renal failure after cardiac surgery is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of data examining the rate of renal recovery after patients have started dialysis following cardiac surgery. We aimed to determine the frequency of and time to renal recovery of patients requiring dialysis after cardiac surgery.

Objective: Our understanding of the impact of a center's case volume on failure to rescue (FTR) after cardiac surgery is incomplete. We hypothesized that increasing center case volume would be associated with lower FTR.

Methods: Patients undergoing a Society of Thoracic Surgeons index operation in a regional collaborative (2011-2021) were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether hospitals recognized as Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) centers of excellence (CoE) lead to better recovery outcomes for patients who experience cardiac arrest after cardiac surgery.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 43,000 patients who underwent cardiac surgery between 2011 and 2021, comparing results from ELSO CoE facilities to non-CoE facilities.
  • Findings reveal that patients at ELSO CoE centers had a 44% lower chance of failure to rescue (not recovering from cardiac arrest) compared to those at non-CoE hospitals, indicating the effectiveness of quality improvement programs in surgical settings.

Object detection is a vital research direction in machine vision and deep learning. The object detection technique based on deep understanding has achieved tremendous progress in feature extraction, image representation, classification, and recognition in recent years, due to this rapid growth of deep learning theory and technology. Scholars have proposed a series of methods for the object detection algorithm as well as improvements in data processing, network structure, loss function, and so on.

Background: Increasing socioeconomic distress has been associated with worse cardiac surgery outcomes. The extent to which the pandemic affected cardiac surgical access and outcomes remains unknown. We sought to examine the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and outcomes after cardiac surgery by socioeconomic status.

Environmental abiotic stresses challenge food security by depressing crop yields often exceeding 50% of their annual production. Different methods, including conventional as well as genomic-assisted breeding, mutagenesis, and genetic engineering have been utilized to enhance stress resilience in several crop species. Plant breeding has been partly successful in developing crop varieties against abiotic stresses owning to the complex genetics of the traits as well as the narrow genetic base in the germplasm.

Gene expression and translation in plant mitochondria remain poorly understood due to the complicated transcription of its mRNA. In this study, we report the 5' and 3' RNA extremities and promoters of five mitochondrial genes, atp1, atp4, atp6, atp9, and cox3. The results reveal that four genes (atp1, atp4, atp6, and cox3) are transcribed from multiple initiation sites but with a uniform transcript at the 3' end, indicating that heterogeneity of the 5' end is a common feature in the transcription of kenaf mitochondrial genes.

Feminizing adrenal tumors are rare and generally malignant tumors usually seen in male adults and children. We report the case of a benign feminizing adrenal tumor in a male patient. To our knowledge, only 2 other cases of benign, estrogen-only-secreting adrenal tumors have been reported.

Groundwater with an excessive level of Arsenic (As) is a threat to human health. In Bangladesh, out of 64 districts, the groundwater of 50 and 59 districts contains As exceeding the Bangladesh (50 μg/L) and WHO (10 μg/L) standards for potable water. This review focuses on the occurrence, origin, plausible sources, and mobilization mechanisms of As in the groundwater of Bangladesh to better understand its environmental as well as public health consequences.
