Detection of constituent layers of histological oral sub-mucous fibrosis: images using the hybrid segmentation algorithm.

This paper concentrates on the segmentation of histological images of oral sub-mucous fibrosis (OSF) into its constituent layers. In this regard hybrid segmentation algorithm shows very interesting results. The segmentation results depict the superiority of hybrid segmentation algorithm (HSA) in comparison to region growing algorithm (RGA).

The role of cell death in sexually dimorphic muscle development: male-specific muscles are retained in female bax/bak knockout mice.

The bulbocavernosus (BC) and levator ani (LA) muscles are present in males but absent or severely reduced in females, and the fate of these muscles controls the survival of motoneurons in the sexually dimorphic spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernosus. However, the mechanism underlying the sex difference in BC and LA development has been controversial. We examined the role of cell death in sexual differentiation of the bulbocavernosus BC/LA muscles in mice.

Role of finite populations in determining evolutionary dynamics.

The connection between the finite size of an evolving population and its dynamical behavior is examined through analytical and computational studies of a simple model of evolution. The infinite population limit of the model is shown to be governed by a special case of the quasispecies equations. A flat fitness landscape yields identical results for the dynamics of infinite and finite populations.

Lawnmowers are one of the most frequent causes of mutilating injuries to children. The majority of accidents are caused by negligence of the operator. Most injuries of this type are caused by direct contact with the spinning blade and, less frequently, by projectiles propelled by the blade.

Preschooler feeding practices and beliefs: differences among Spanish- and English-speaking WIC clients.

This study explored preschooler feeding practices and beliefs among Spanish- and English-speaking WIC participants in Texas. The Preschooler Feeding Questionnaire examined 9 dimensions of the parent-child feeding interaction among 235 caregivers. Results from ANOVA and post hoc analyses demonstrated significant differences in reported preschooler feeding practices and beliefs among Spanish-speaking Hispanics in comparison with English-speaking Hispanics and non-Hispanics.

Pericardial tamponade masquerading as septic shock.

A 53-year-old man with steroid dependent rheumatoid arthritis presented with fever and serous articular drainage. Oral antibiotics were initially prescribed. Subsequent hemodynamic instability was attributed to septic shock.

Influence of the nature of quantum dot surface cations on interactions with DNA.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanoparticles that are approximately 1-10nm in diameter, similar to small proteins, and their photoluminescence is sensitive to the presence and nature of adsorbates. We have deployed these nanomaterials as luminescent probes of DNA structure. Sequence dependent conformational flexibility of DNA is of great interest due to its implications for drug-DNA and DNA-protein interactions.

Interaction of HIPPI with putative promoter sequence of caspase-1 in vitro and in vivo.

To investigate the mechanism of increased expression of caspase-1 in Hippi expressing HeLa and Neuro 2A cells, reported earlier, we report here that HIPPI directly interacted with upstream sequence of caspase-1 gene (-700 to +17, 717 bp). Deletion of this 717 bp sequence and further analysis by electrophoretic mobility shift assay and fluorescence quenching revealed that HIPPI interacted with 60 bp (-151 to -92) upstream sequence of caspase-1. We also observed by chromatin immunoprecipitation assay that HIPPI interacted with the 717 bp sequence in vivo.

Simultaneous determination of ribavirin and ribavirin base in monkey plasma by high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry.

For the first time, a liquid chromatographic method with tandem mass spectrometric detection (LC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of ribavirin and rabavirin base was developed and validated over the concentration range of 10-5,000 ng/ml, respectively, using a 0.025 ml monkey plasma sample. Ribavirin, ribavirin base, and the internal standards were extracted from monkey plasma via protein precipitation.

Economic burden of tuberculosis in patients attending DOT centres in Delhi.

Tuberculosis inflicts a negative impact on global socioeconomic prosperity. Though India carries one third of the global burden of the disease, few studies have focussed in the country on this aspect. The present study was therefore, framed to estimate economic loss amongst TB patients.

Problem: In today's economic environment, enterprises may not be able to fund every new project aimed at promoting health and safety in the workplace. Company level economic evaluation of interventions can provide guidance in sound business decision-making. The Economic Evaluation of Occupational Health and Safety Interventions at the Company Level Meeting brought together members of the global occupational safety and health community interested in encouraging the use of economic knowledge and tools to evaluate economic gains from occupational health and safety interventions.

A resolved outflow of matter from a brown dwarf.

The birth of stars involves not only accretion but also, counter-intuitively, the expulsion of matter in the form of highly supersonic outflows. Although this phenomenon has been seen in young stars, a fundamental question is whether it also occurs among newborn brown dwarfs: these are the so-called 'failed stars', with masses between stars and planets, that never manage to reach temperatures high enough for normal hydrogen fusion to occur. Recently, evidence for accretion in young brown dwarfs has mounted, and their spectra show lines that are suggestive of outflows.

Magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of coronary artery disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining importance in cardiology as the noninvasive test of choice for patients with a multitude of cardiovascular problems. Recently, cardiovascular MRI has emerged as an important noninvasive diagnostic modality in the assessment of coronary artery disease. Because of its superior spatial resolution, integration of qualitative and quantitative methodology, and excellent reproducibility, MRI has advantages over conventional noninvasive modalities currently used in the evaluation of coronary artery disease.

Perioperative care of the patient with nephropathic cystinosis.

Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive disease that results in a defective integral membrane protein responsible for the transport of cystine out of lysosomes. This results in the accumulation of cystine in the lysosomes of almost every tissue, with subsequent formation of damaging crystals. The cystinotic process may affect every system of the body, but is particularly damaging to the kidneys and eyes.
