Background: Herpes zoster is a potential risk factor for dementia. The effectiveness of the recombinant zoster vaccine for preventing dementia is uncertain.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used de-identified claims data from the Optum Labs Data Warehouse database from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2022, to determine whether the recombinant zoster vaccine is associated with a reduced risk of dementia.

Background: Inhibitors targeting cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6), crucial for cell cycle regulation, have shown promise in early-stage studies for treating central nervous system (CNS) tumors. However, challenges such as limited CNS penetration, optimal treatment duration, and systemic side effects have impeded their clinical translation for pediatric brain tumors (PBTs).

Methods: We evaluated the potency of CDK4/6 inhibitors across various PBTs cell lines, focusing particularly on palbociclib against atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) with cell viability assays and gene expression analysis.

The PIM kinase family, consisting of PIM1, PIM2, and PIM3, is a group of serine/threonine protein kinases crucial for cellular growth, immunoregulation, and oncogenesis. PIM1 kinase is often overexpressed in solid and hematopoietic malignancies, promoting cell survival, proliferation, migration, and senescence by activating key genes. In vitro and in vivo studies have established the oncogenic potential of PIM1 kinases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines lead (Pb) pollution in the Western Indian Ocean, using a 24-year coral record from Lakshadweep to understand historical and current contamination levels and their effects on the environment.
  • Results show that lead concentrations in surface seawater nearly doubled from 1990 to 2013, mainly due to anthropogenic sources like aerosol pollution from land.
  • The findings reveal significant differences in lead isotope distributions between the western and eastern Indian Ocean, indicating a substantial impact of human activity, which underscores the need for tailored environmental management in the region.

Despite some progress, universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) by 2030-a remit of Sustainable Development Goal 6-remains a distant prospect in many countries. Policy-makers and implementers of the WASH sector are challenged to track a new path. This research aimed to identify core orienting themes of the sector, as legacies of past processes, which can provide insights for its future.

Disease X is caused by pathogen X, an unknown infectious agent that can potentially trigger an epidemic or pandemic. Pathogen X might be any pathogen, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, and prions. WHO uses the term 'Disease X' for any new emerging disease caused by an unknown pathogen X.

Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions significantly reduce health risks in low- and middle-income countries. Many rely on women, but the extent of women's engagement remains undocumented. Here we conducted a re-review of papers from two systematic reviews that assessed the effectiveness of water, sanitation and/or handwashing with soap interventions on diarrhoeal disease and acute respiratory infections to assess women's roles in WASH research and intervention activities.

The study investigates the sources of metals in urban road dusts using elemental concentration and Pb isotopic ratios. The elemental concentrations are also utilized to determine the present heavy metal emissions as well as projected emissions till 2045. Bayesian mixing model for source apportionment highlights the significant contributions of both exhaust and non-exhaust sources to the metal-enriched urban road dusts, with each contributing approximately 40 %.

Purpose: Due to lack of large randomized clinical trials to determine best practices in treating acute retinal necrosis (ARN), there is not a clear consensus amongst ophthalmologists on how to best manage this potentially blinding condition. The aim of this study is to survey common practice patterns and analyze the factors that affect ophthalmologists' management of ARN.

Methods: An anonymous survey was distributed to uveitis and retina specialists who are members of the American Uveitis Society (AUS) via email to query practice patterns regarding ARN.

Plant metal uptake can occur through both soil-root and atmospheric transfer from leaves. The latter holds potential implications for development of biofiltration systems. To explore this potential, it is crucial to understand entrapment capacity and metal sources within plants.

The rising global incidence of uterine cancer is linked to the escalating prevalence of obesity. Obesity results in alterations in adipocytokines and IGFs, driving cancer progression via inflammation, increased cell proliferation, and apoptosis inhibition, although the precise mechanisms are still unclear. This study examined a set of six markers, namely, adiponectin, leptin, IL6, TNFα, IGF1, and IGF2 and compared them between fifty age-matched endometrial cancer patients (study group) and non-cancer patients with benign gynaecological conditions (control group).

Climate change intensifies longstanding tensions over groundwater sustainability and equity of access among users. Though private land ownership is a primary mechanism for accessing groundwater in many regions, few studies have systematically examined the extent to which farmland markets transform groundwater access patterns over time. This study begins to fill this gap by examining farmland transactions overlying groundwater from 2003-17 in California.

The Darkweb, part of the deep web, can be accessed only through specialized computer software and used for illegal activities such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, and exploitation. Technological advancements like Tor, bitcoin, and cryptocurrencies allow criminals to carry out these activities anonymously, leading to increased use of the Darkweb. At the same time, computers have become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping our behavior, and influencing how we interact with each other and the world.

Introduction: Efficient delivery of therapeutics across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) tumors is a major challenge to the development of safe and efficacious therapies. Locoregional drug delivery platforms offer an improved therapeutic index by achieving high drug concentrations in the target tissue with negligible systemic exposure. Intrathecal (intraventricular) [IT] and convection-enhanced delivery [CED] are two clinically relevant methods being employed for various CNS malignancies.

  • * Other zoonotic infections like the nipah virus, monkeypox, and langya have been overlooked during the pandemic, leading to increased outbreaks in endemic regions, especially in the Indian subcontinent.
  • * The shortage of healthcare professionals and the lack of vaccines or treatments for these infections highlight the need for better preparedness against future zoonotic outbreaks.

Despite dramatic reductions in global risk exposures to unsafe water sources, lack of access to clean water remains a persistent problem in many rural and last-mile communities. A great deal is known about demand for household water treatment systems; however, similar evidence for fully treated water products is limited. This study evaluates an NGO-based potable water delivery service in rural Bihar, India, meant to stand-in for more robust municipal treated water supply systems that have yet to reach the area.

Chronic inflammation has been closely linked to the development and progression of various cancers. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process involving the acquisition of mesenchymal features by carcinoma cells and is an important link between inflammation and cancer development. Inflammatory mediators in the tumour micro-environment, such as cytokines and chemokines, can promote EMT changes in cancer cells.

  • Proboscis lateralis (PL) is a rare congenital facial deformity characterized by a tubular structure protruding from the inner corner of the eye, often linked to other craniofacial deformities.
  • A reported case involved a full-term female newborn with PL alongside several serious health issues, including brain and heart anomalies.
  • The findings suggest the need for comprehensive assessments of additional organ system defects in individuals diagnosed with PL due to its association with various complications.

Background: Centralized chlorination of urban piped water supplies has historically contributed to major reductions in waterborne illness. In locations without effective centralized water treatment, point-of-use (POU) chlorination for households is widely promoted to improve drinking water quality and health. Realizing these health benefits requires correct, consistent, and sustained product use, but real-world evaluations have often observed low levels of use.
