With a greater demand for cost consciousness in the health-care delivery system, it is time to review what we expect to accomplish with intensive coronary care. This paper reviews the literature on the subject, attempts to determine the nature and function of the "system," and tries to provide reasons for maintaining its existence or eliminating it altogether. The approach in this paper is objective, but not financially so.

The survival data, measured as a function of cis Pt[II] dose were similar in a normal cell line (Human foetal lung) compared to a UV-sensitive, thymine dimer excision repair-deficient cell line (Xeroderma pigmentosum). However, there was a marked difference between the two cell lines when binding to DNA was plotted against dose of cis Pt[II] given for 1 h.

A genetic relationship among these dogs was not determined. Exploratory thoractomy, performed in 2 dogs, demonstrated an apparent compression of the esophagus by the left subclavian artery and brachiocephalic artery at the level of the 2nd and 3rd intercostal spaces.

Based on electrocardiography and right ventricular weights, none of the 15 dogs had evidence of right ventricular hypertrophy. Based on radiography, only 2 of the 15 dogs had right ventricles of normal size.

Femoral artery grafts were anastomosed end-to-end to the left internal mammary artery proximally and end-to-side to the circumflex coronary artery distally in 21 adult mongrel dogs.
