Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormal red blood cell shape (sickling). The incidence of the disease in the Kingdom of Bahrain is approximately 2.1%.

Infections in long term care facilities (LTCF) are common and are considered a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Endemic infections and outbreaks are observed in LTCF. Of particular concern is the growth of multi-drug resistant organisms.
