Background: Left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) may develop without coronary artery disease, hypertension (HT), or valvular pathologies in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), which is defined as diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) and its pathophysiology is still unclear. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of DM, and patients with DR have increased risk for the development of heart failure (HF). Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) evaluates longitudinal deformation in left atrium (LA) myocardium and previous studies utilizing 2D-STE have revealed the detrimental effects of DM on LA functions.

Article Synopsis
  • Right ventricular (RV) failure significantly contributes to complications in patients with left ventricular (LV) end-stage heart failure (ESHF), making assessments like the pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi) and RV stroke work index (RVSWI) crucial for understanding RV function.
  • A study involving 416 ESHF patients found that those experiencing adverse cardiac events (ACE) had lower PAPi levels, indicating a potential risk factor, while RVSWI did not show a similar association.
  • The research concluded that low PAPi is a strong predictor for ACE, with a specific threshold (PAPi ≤2.56) indicating higher risk, while RVSWI exhibited a nonlinear J-curve relationship with ACE risk

Background: The aetiology of heart failure may have different effects on right ventricular (RV) function, pulmonary pressures and RV afterload. Pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC) and pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi) are novel haemodynamic indices used in determining RV afterload and RV function, respectively. We aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in PAC and PAPi between ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICMP) and non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (NICMP) in patients with end-stage heart failure.

Background: In daily practice, C-reactive protein (CRP) may be used to predict recurrence and treatment response in patients with acute pericarditis; however, the predictive role of CRP might be insufficient for clinical prediction in some patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the composite endpoint of pericarditis recurrence and/or tamponade within 1 year in patients with acute pericarditis.

Methods: A total of 104 patients diagnosed with acute idiopathic pericarditis (mean age 42.
