The pace of water contamination is increasing daily due to expanding industrialisation. Finding a feasible solution for effectively remediating various organic and inorganic pollutants from large water bodies remains challenging. However, a nano-engineered advanced hybrid material could provide a practical solution for the efficient removal of such pollutants.

A simple, rapid, and sensitive electrochemical biosensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was developed for onsite detection of in real time. This work analyzed the effect of aptamer conjugation and PBS buffer solution on the colloidal stability of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Aggregations of the AgNPs after aptamer conjugation in PBS buffer were observed from the particle size distribution analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focuses on creating a cost-effective adsorbent made from graphene oxide embedded in polyurethane (GOPU) to treat water contaminated with lead ions, Methylene blue dye, and E. coli bacteria.
  • - Characterization techniques confirmed the successful synthesis of GOPU granules, which demonstrated high adsorption capacities of 842 mg/g for lead ions and 899 mg/g for Methylene blue, following specific kinetic and adsorption models.
  • - The GOPU granules showed over 100% removal efficiency for E. coli and performed best in an adsorption column setup at certain conditions, indicating their potential for effective water purification.

This study proposed a two-step method involving hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly processes for synthesising an amine-functionalised magnetic ligand graphene oxide-based nanocomposite (EDTA@FeO@GO). The amine groups were successfully attached to the surface of iron (II, III) oxide (FeO), which were embedded on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) (FeO@GO). This EDTA@ FeO@GO nanocomposite was used as a chelating agent to bind the toxic heavy metal ions.

Cryptorchidism is associated with increased risk of malignancy and infertility. We present a case of a 30-year-old man who presented to the Emergency Department of our tertiary care hospital with spontaneous intra-abdominal rupture of the seminoma in undescended testis with hemoperitoneum. This is a rare presentation of seminoma and emphasises the importance of scrotal examination in young men presenting with acute abdomen.
