A safe, novel and ingenious method for autogenous bone graft storage in spine surgery with constrained resources - operative site as the bone bank.

Background: The aim of our study is to establish whether the bone graft harvested and stored in the surgical wound by our novel technique is safe, reproducible and preserves the viability of the graft. In doing so, it promises successful bony fusion in spine and orthopaedic surgeries.

Methods: A prospective clinical case series was conducted for autogenous bone graft storage in complex spine surgeries requiring staged procedures, in resource constrained settings.

Three-stage correction of severe idiopathic scoliosis with limited skeletal traction during a humanitarian surgical mission: illustrative case.

Background: Underprivileged and underserved patients from developing countries often present late with advanced, untreated spinal deformities. We report a three-stage all-posterior approach using limited skeletal traction with Gardner-Wells tongs (GWTs) for the management of severe idiopathic scoliosis during a humanitarian surgical mission trip.

Observations: A 17-year-old high-school female was previously diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (diagnosed at age 8) and progressed to a severe 135° kyphoscoliosis.

Introduction: There is minimal literature regarding when dressing changes should be performed. We present the dressing change protocol adopted by our institution. The purpose of this study was to provide an update of our experience with this dressing change protocol over a 15-year period.

The number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their life expectancy has been increasing. With time number of patients undergoing spine surgery has also been on a rise. This study we did a retrospective review of registry data to investigate the mortality rate of chronic kidney disease patients following spine surgery using a large, multi-center spine registry.

The importance of a skin bridge in peripheral tissue perfusion in perforator flaps.

Background: Perforator flaps are increasingly used in reconstructive surgery. However, the microvascular perfusion pattern within these flaps remains essentially unknown. In perforator flaps, the importance of preserving the skin bridge at the base is still an object of debate.

Isoflurane-induced depolarization of neural mitochondria increases with age.

Background And Objectives: The mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsi(m)) drives the three fundamental functions of mitochondria, namely adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation, Ca(2+) uptake/storage, and generation/detoxification of ROS. Isoflurane depolarizes neural mitochondria. The sensitivity for general anesthetics increases with age, but the mechanism for this age-related sensitivity is still unknown.

[Hand function after surgery for flexor tendon injuries].

Background: Flexor tendon injuries are difficult to treat and the postoperative results have traditionally been poor.

Material And Methods: The article presents postoperative results (11-22 months) after surgical treatment of injured flexor tendons at Stavanger University Hospital. 32 injuries in 30 patients met the inclusion criteria; 23 of these patients responded to letters and telephone contacts.
