Background: Follow-up protocols after total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA or TKA, respectively) have little uniformity, which can lead to emergency department (ED) visits for postoperative complications. We sought to determine the incidence and timing of postoperative complications after THA or TKA.

Methods: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of all adults in Ontario who underwent primary THA or TKA between 2010 and 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between the length of hospital stay (LOS) and the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasties, aiming to create a predictive model using machine learning.
  • Over a 6-year period, data from 498,314 patients showed a decline in VTE rates from 1.11% to 0.76%, which correlated strongly with decreasing LOS.
  • The best predictive model identified significant factors related to VTE risk, suggesting that improved prediction methods could enhance patient monitoring and prevention strategies in arthroplasty cases.

Purpose: The potential influence of surgical sequence of elective hip-and-knee reconstructive surgery in relation to an infection-related procedure on postoperative infection rates is not clearly understood. Therefore, we aimed to examine the impact of surgical sequence on the incidence of postoperative infections within one-year and the longest available follow-up period in patients undergoing hip-and-knee reconstructive surgery.

Methods: A case-control study with propensity matching was utilized to examine elective surgeries conducted at Sunnybrook Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic centre, Toronto, Canada between 2015 and 2018.

Background And Purpose:  Total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be performed through various surgical approaches, including direct anterior (DAA). DAA-THA may offer faster recovery but carries a higher risk of complications, which may be mitigated by surgeon volume and experience. We examined the association of surgeons' annual surgical volume with major complications after DAA-THA in a population-based sample.

Background: The belief that cannabis has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties continues to attract patients with chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain towards its use. However, the role that cannabis will play in the management of chronic MSK pain remains to be determined. This study examined 1) the rate, patterns of use, and self-reported efficacy of cannabis use among patients with chronic MSK pain and 2) the interest and potential barriers to cannabis use among patients with chronic MSK pain not currently using cannabis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at how many patients with knee problems got MRI scans before having knee surgery called total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • It found that about 1 in 5 patients had an MRI in the two years before their surgery, and most of these scans were ordered by their regular doctors.
  • The study suggests that getting these MRIs may not be necessary and could be wasting money and making people wait longer for their surgery.

Objective: Access to care varies between countries. It is theorized that income-based disparities in access may be reduced in countries with universal health insurance relative to the United States, but data are currently limited. We hypothesized that income-based differences in total hip arthroplasty (THA) utilization and outcomes would be larger in the United States than in Canada.

The supine 'off-table' anterior-based muscle-sparing (ABMS) approach is an established approach for primary total hip arthroplasty. The approach is performed with the patient positioned supine on a regular operating room table. It combines utilizing the Watson-Jones interval (without disrupting the abductor muscles) with principles of capsular management borrowed from the direct anterior approach.

Background and objective Glass ionomer cement (GIC), also known as polyalkenoate cement, has been extensively used in dentistry for both luting and restorative purposes. Despite being the first choice for aesthetic restorations due to their chemical bonding ability to teeth, GICs have faced challenges such as low mechanical properties, abrasion resistance, and sensitivity to moisture, leading to the search for improved materials.  This study aims to assess the effects of thermocycling on the compressive, flexural strength, and microhardness of green-mediated nanocomposite-modified GIC in comparison to traditional GIC.

Pathogen severely affects plant mitochondrial processes including respiration, however, the roles and mechanism of mitochondrial protein during the immune response remain largely unexplored. The interplay of plant hormone signaling during defense is an outcome of plant pathogen interaction. We recently discovered that the Arabidopsis calcineurin B-like interacting protein kinase 9 (AtCIPK9) interacts with the voltage-dependent anion channel 3 (AtVDAC3) and inhibits MV-induced oxidative damage.
