The interferon (IFN)-inducible, double-stranded RNA activated protein kinase (PKR) is a dual-specificity kinase, which has an essential role in the regulation of protein synthesis by phosphorylating the translation eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). Here, we show the tyrosine (Tyr) phosphorylation of PKR in response to type I or type II IFNs. We show that PKR physically interacts with either Jak1 or Tyk2 in unstimulated cells and that these interactions are increased in IFN-treated cells.

This Letter describes a periodically oscillating foam flow in a microfluidic device. For constant input parameters, both the produced bubble volume and the flow rate vary over a factor of two. We make explicit the link between the foam topology alternance and flow rate changes, and construct a retroaction model where bubbles still present downstream determine the volume of new bubbles, in agreement with experiment.

Photosynthesis on Earth can occur in a diversity of organisms in the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range of 10 nmol of photons m(-2) s(-1) to 8 mmol of photons m(-2) s(-1). Similar considerations would probably apply to photosynthetic organisms on Earth-like planets (ELPs) in the continuously habitable zone of other stars. On Earth, starlight PAR is inadequate for photosynthetically supported growth.

Enzymes and transporters that catalyse reactions involving inorganic carbon are well characterized with respect to the species of inorganic carbon (CO2 or HCO3-) with which they interact. There is less information on the species recognized by proteins that sense inorganic carbon. The lower limits of photosynthetically useable radiation at which growth and photosynthesis can occur establish the lower boundaries for the extent of photolithotrophy in the biosphere. Photolithotrophic growth denotes the capacity to grow with photons as the sole energy input. Slippage in terms of photosynthetic energy conversion implies a less than theoretical stoichiometry of energy-transduction process(es) such as the dissipation of intermediates of O(2) evolution and of ATP synthesis (H(+)/e(-) and H(+)/ATP ratios).

Tyrosine phosphorylation of the transcription factors Stat1 and Stat3 is required for them to dimerize, translocate to the nucleus, and induce gene transcription. Nuclear Stat1 and Stat3 are dephosphorylated and deactivated by the T-cell protein-tyrosine phosphatase (TC-PTP), which facilitates the return of both proteins to the cytoplasm. The protein kinase PKR plays an important role in translational control through the modulation of eukaryotic initiation factor-2alpha phosphorylation.

Background And Aims: It is stated in many recent publications that nitrate (NO3-) acts as a signal to regulate dry matter partitioning between the shoot and root of higher plants. Here we challenge this hypothesis and present evidence for the viewpoint that NO3- and other environmental effects on the shoot:root dry weight ratio (S:R) of higher plants are often related mechanistically to changes in shoot protein concentration.

Methods: The literature on environmental effects on S:R is reviewed, focusing on relationships between S:R, growth and leaf NO3- and protein concentrations.

Direct comparisons between photosynthetic O(2) evolution rate and electron transport rate (ETR) were made in situ over 24 h using the benthic macroalga Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), growing and measured at a depth of 1.8 m, where the midday irradiance rose to 400-600 mumol photons m(-2) s(-1). O(2) exchange was measured with a 5-chamber data-logging apparatus and ETR with a submersible pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer (Diving-PAM).

Six adult monkeys (Macaca mulatta) received a unilateral lesion of the lateral corticospinal tract (CST) in the thoracic spinal cord. Prior to surgery, the animals were trained to perform quadrupedal stepping on a treadmill, and item retrieval with the foot. Whole body kinematics and electromyogram (EMG) recordings were made prior to, and at regular intervals over a period of 12 weeks after the CST lesion.

Background: Exposures to allergens are thought to be important risk factors for asthma. We conducted a longitudinal study of indoor allergen and fungal levels in Melbourne homes between 1996 and 1998 to examine the effect of changes in allergen exposure upon asthma and associated outcomes.

The evolution of organisms capable of oxygenic photosynthesis paralleled a long-term reduction in atmospheric CO2 and the increase in O2. Consequently, the competition between O2 and CO2 for the active sites of RUBISCO became more and more restrictive to the rate of photosynthesis. In coping with this situation, many algae and some higher plants acquired mechanisms that use energy to increase the CO2 concentrations (CO2 concentrating mechanisms, CCMs) in the proximity of RUBISCO.
