Trade-offs play vital roles in evolutionary theory, linking organism performance to changing environments in the context of global change. Marine microalgae, as one of the most important groups of primary producers in the biosphere, exhibit significant trade-offs across multiple traits in response to environmental changes, such as elevated CO (and consequent ocean acidification) and warming. In this review, we synthesize recent findings on the trade-offs associated with both short-term phenotypic acclimation and long-term genotypic adaptation of marine microalgae.

Background: Globally, community health worker (CHW) programmes are critical to addressing health worker shortages and have been recognised as critical pillars within the drive towards universal health coverage (UHC). In 2016, the Liberian Ministry of Health launched the National Community Health Services Policy 2016-2021, which included significant CHW programme reform to address ongoing health workforce capacity gaps in the country. Strengthening management and leadership competencies among district and local health managers has emerged as a common approach for health systems strengthening and to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). While the literature is rich with localized examples of initiatives that aim to strengthen the capacity of district or local health managers, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, considerably less attention is paid to the science of 'how' to scale-up these initiatives. The aim of this paper is thus to examine the 'process' of scaling-up a management strengthening intervention (MSI) and identify new knowledge and key lessons learned that can be used to inform the scale-up process of other complex health interventions, in support of UHC.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has tested the resilience capacities of health systems worldwide and highlighted the need to understand the concept, pathways, and elements of resilience in different country contexts. In this study, we assessed the health system response to COVID-19 in Nepal and examined the processes of policy formulation, communication, and implementation at the three tiers of government, including the dynamic interactions between tiers. Nepal was experiencing the early stages of federalization reform when COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, and clarity in roles and capacity to implement functions were the prevailing challenges, especially among the subnational governments.

Biopharmaceutical manufacture is transitioning from batch to integrated and continuous biomanufacturing (ICB). The common framework for most ICB, potentially enables a global biomanufacturing ecosystem utilizing modular and multi-function manufacturing equipment. Integrating unit operation hardware and software from multiple suppliers, complex supply chains enabled by multiple customized single-use flow paths, and large volume buffer production/storage make this ICB vision difficult to achieve with commercially available manufacturing equipment.

Background: Maternal history of trauma is a risk factor for distress during pregnancy. The purpose of this paper was to examine the theorized differential impact of a cognitive behavioral intervention (Mothers and Babies Personalized; MB-P) on maternal distress and emotional regulation for those with ≥ 1 adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; vs no ACEs) from pregnancy to 3 months postpartum.

Kelp forests are threatened by ocean warming, yet effects of co-occurring drivers such as CO are rarely considered when predicting their performance in the future. In Australia, the kelp forms extensive forests across seawater temperatures of approximately 7-26°C. The essential elements Ca and P, taken up and used metabolically as Ca and H PO /HPO respectively, could precipitate as one or more of the insoluble forms calcium phosphate (mainly apatite) if the free ion concentrations and pH are high enough. In the cytosol, chloroplast stroma, and mitochondrial matrix, the very low free Ca concentration avoids calcium phosphate precipitation, apart from occasionally in the mitochondrial matrix. The low free Ca concentration in these compartments is commonly thought of in terms of the role of Ca in signalling.
