Integrated surveillance of human respiratory viruses in addition to SARS-CoV-2 in a public testing facility in the Netherlands.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 prevention measures impact the circulation of other respiratory viruses. Surveillance in the network of general practitioners is hampered by widespread testing for SARS-CoV-2 in public testing facilities.

Objectives: To evaluate integrated community surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses and describe epidemiological trends.

Ascending Aorta and Myocardial Mechanics in Patients with "Clinically Normal" Bicuspid Aortic Valve.

Aortic valve dysfunction and aortic wall changes are well-known complications of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether a remodeling process of the left ventricle (LV) is present in patients with isolated BAV. Twenty-two consecutive patients (39 ± 15 years, 9 males) with clinically normal BAV and 18 age- and gender-matched control subjects (37 ± 10 years, 9 males) were included.

Two cases of maternal alloimmunization against human neutrophil alloantigen-4b, one causing severe alloimmune neonatal neutropenia.

Background: Human neutrophil antigen (HNA)-4a/4bw is encoded by 230G>A in ITGAM, which results in an Arg61His substitution of the αM chain (CD11b) of complement receptor 3 (CR3; CD11b/18 or Mac-1). HNA-4a antibodies have been detected in the sera of female blood donors and in maternal sera that caused alloimmune neonatal neutropenia (ANN), in which maternal immunoglobulin (Ig)G antibodies against a paternally inherited HNA cross the placenta and destroy fetal and neonatal neutrophils. However, to date, antibodies specific for HNA-4b have not been reported.

[Cluster outbreak of MRSA in the community; recognition and approach].

Background: Community-acquired infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) mainly affects healthy young people, without health-care related risk factors for MRSA. Patients often present with skin and soft-tissue infections.

Case Description: An 18-year-old woman presented at the casualty department with recurrent purulent skin infections.

Solitary IgM phase II response has a limited predictive value in the diagnosis of acute Q fever.

We investigated the positive predictive value (PPV) of a solitary positive immunoglobulin M (IgM) phase II response for the serodiagnosis of acute Q fever detected with either an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) or an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Initial and follow-up sera from patients suspected of acute Q fever were included if initially only IgM phase II tested positive with IFA in 2008 (n=92), or ELISA in 2009 (n=85). A seroconversion for Q fever was defined as an initial sample being IgG phase II negative but positive in the follow-up sample.

Empowering staff nurses to use research to change practice for safe patient handling.

Although evidence supports safe patient handling practices, nurses are not always involved in the process of evaluating and selecting lifting equipment. This study used a descriptive design to: (1) assess staff's perceived barriers and attitudes toward safe patient handling, (2) identify staff needs for equipment and education concerning safe patient handling, and (3) involve staff in the equipment selection process before implementing a safe patient handling program. Overall, staff on all units indicated that they wanted more equipment and education.

Phase-contrast microtomography of thin biomaterials.

Phase-contrast microtomography, performed at the beamline ID 22 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble, France), is demonstrated for high-resolution 3-D imaging of a hydroxyapatite sample. The technique, which relies on phase contrast imaging, gives the possibility to observe features inside samples with negligible absorption contrast. The positive results obtained suggest a possible future investigation of the influence of the distribution of pores and defects inside biomaterial coatings, on the growth of osteoblast cells.

In-line holography and phase-contrast microtomography with high energy x-rays.

Holography with high energy x-rays is now feasible due to the coherence properties of third generation synchrotron sources. Simple in-line holographic techniques can be used to generate edge-enhanced images which for many samples can be interpreted without direct phase retrieval. The coherence properties of such sources and their exploitation for phase-contrast microimaging are demonstrated.

Autophosphorylation of p110delta phosphoinositide 3-kinase: a new paradigm for the regulation of lipid kinases in vitro and in vivo.

Phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) are lipid kinases which also possess an in vitro protein kinase activity towards themselves or their adaptor proteins. The physiological relevance of these phosphorylations is unclear at present. Here, the protein kinase activity of the tyrosine kinase-linked PI3K, p110delta, is characterized and its functional impact assessed.

Structure and chromosomal location of the mouse interleukin-12 p35 and p40 subunit genes.

Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a heterodimeric cytokine composed of p35 and p40 subunits and is required for induction of T helper 1 (Th1) responses. Knowledge of how the IL-12 gene is regulated will permit an understanding of susceptibility and resistance to pathogenic microbes and to autoiummune diseases. In this report, we provide the gene structures, nucleotide sequences and chromosomal assignment for the p35 and p40 subunits of mouse IL-12.

Chronic copper poisoning in Angora kids.

The investigation of five field cases of chronic copper poisoning in a group of 100 Angora kids is reported. Toxicity was confirmed by the demonstration of Heinz body anaemias, necrotizing liver disease, haemoglobinuric nephrosis and excessive levels of copper in blood, livers and kidneys. The dietary history of the kids is described.

Plasma colloid oncotic pressure-pulmonary artery occlusion pressure gradient. A poor predictor of pulmonary edema in surgical intensive care unit patients.

Because Starling's equation contains four factors that theoretically influence fluid movement across the pulmonary capillary bed, we prospectively examined the relationship between the plasma colloid oncotic pressure (PCOP) minus the mean pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP) (the only two presently available clinically for measurement) and pulmonary edema determined in terms of percent venous admixture (Qs/Qt) and roentgenographically in 17 consecutive patients in a surgical intensive care unit to determine whether this PCOP-PAOP gradient could accurately predict the presence of pulmonary edema. The PCOP-PAOP gradient proved to be a poor predictor of pulmonary edema determined by these means. We believe this resulted from the inherent insensitivity of the PCOP-PAOP gradient as an estimate of the net intravascular filtration pressure, and Qs/Qt and roentgenograms as measurements of lung edema, as well as the multiplicity of variables involved in the genesis of pulmonary edema in the clinical situation.

Bound immunoglobulin and foreign antigen in lungs of sudden infant death syndrome victims.

Lung sections from 33 infants who died suddenly and unexpectedly and were diagnosed by medical examiners as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) gave evidence of bound immunoglobulin G (IgG) when examined by direct fluorescent antibody technique. Ten tissues from appropriate control infants were negative. Specimens containing IgG exhibited no IgA or IgE, but three contained IgM.
