Identification of novel single nucleotide polymorphisms in the DGAT1 gene of buffaloes by PCR-SSCP.

Diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is a microsomal enzyme that catalyzes the final step of triglyceride synthesis. The DGAT1 gene is a strong functional candidate for determining milk fat content in cattle. In this work, we used PCR-SSCP (polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism) and DNA sequencing to examine polymorphism in the region spanning exon 7 to exon 9 of the DGAT1 gene in Murrah and Pandharpuri buffaloes.

The impact of infection on population health: results of the Ontario burden of infectious diseases study.

Background: Evidence-based priority setting is increasingly important for rationally distributing scarce health resources and for guiding future health research. We sought to quantify the contribution of a wide range of infectious diseases to the overall infectious disease burden in a high-income setting.

Methodology/principal Findings: We used health-adjusted life years (HALYs), a composite measure comprising premature mortality and reduced functioning due to disease, to estimate the burden of 51 infectious diseases and associated syndromes in Ontario using 2005-2007 data.

Molecular differentiation of Peroxysome proliferator activated receptor coactivator-1 among different breeds of Bubalus bubalis.

Peroxysome proliferator activated receptor coactivator-1 gene (PPARGC1A) is a positional and functional candidate gene for milk fat yield. It has key role in energy, fat and glucose metabolism. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Exon-8 of PPARGC1A are reported to be associated with milk fat yield in dairy cattle.

Effect of porosity variation on the electrochemical behavior of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Electrochemical charge storage characteristics of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a function of varying diameter and spacing are reported. It was observed that the specific capacitance of the MWCNTs increased as both diameter and inter-tube spacing decreased. The MWCNT films with 229 nm inter-MWCNT spacing exhibited specific capacitance of 228 F/g versus 70 F/g for 506 nm spacing, when tested in a non-aqueous electrolyte.

Emergence and re-emergence of glanders in India: a description of outbreaks from 2006 to 2011.

Glanders, a bacterial disease of equines caused by Burkholderia mallei, is a fatal infectious disease of equines and has zoonotic significance. The disease has been eradicated from many countries by statutory testing, elimination of infected animals and import restrictions. However, it is still endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Central and South America.

Levetiracetam.

Levetiracetam (LEV) is a novel antiepileptic drug (AED) which was discovered in early 1980s and soon, in 1999 FDA approved LEV for the management of partial onset seizure. In India, LEV tablet was approved in April 2005. It acts by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, which is present on synaptic vesicles and some neuroendocrine cells.

Incidence of silicosis in flourmill workers.

Background: Silicosis is an ancient occupational illness reported in silica mill workers, agate stone workers, slate pen workers and mining industry. However its association in flour mill workers has not been established.

Aims: To study the incidence of silicosis and respiratory morbidity in flour mill workers.

Atypical cardiac myxomas: a clinicopathologic analysis and their comparison to 64 typical myxomas.

Introduction: Myxomas are the most common among the primary cardiac neoplasms, seen mainly in adult population, and are typically attached to the interatrial septum, on the left side. Myxomas arising from other sites are designated as "atypical myxomas." In this article, we describe the clinicopathologic features of 28 such lesions, resected in 20 patients.

Assessment of awareness regarding climate change and its health hazards among the medical students.

Background: Climate change has emerged as one of the most devastating environmental threat and there is overwhelming evidence of wide range of implications for human health. To mitigate this, well-prepared medical man power is required.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were (1) to assess the awareness regarding climate change and its health hazards among the medical students and (2) to recommend the awareness campaigns regarding climate change and its health hazards for students based on the results.

Ayurveda (ancient India medicinal system) physicians treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with allegedly safer herbal formulations. We report a head-to-head comparison in an exploratory drug trial.

Integrative endeavor for renaissance in Ayurveda.

Currently western medicine has assumed the central position in mainstream global healthcare. Openness to learn from contemporary disciplines of basic sciences, application of modern technology and further adoption of the evidence-based approach has helped western medicine gain its currently acknowledged position as mainstream modern medicine. Modern medicine has further developed forms of integrative medicine by developing interfaces with other systems of medicine, including traditional, complementary and alternative medicine.

Zirconium for esthetic rehabilitation: an overview.

The demand for esthetic restorations has resulted in an increased use of dental ceramics for anterior and posterior restorations. A few decades ago, all-ceramic restorations were restricted to treatment in the anterior region, but now all-ceramic restorations can be made anywhere in the dentition. The properties of traditional ceramic materials, however, have limited their use to single crowns; larger restorations have been inadvisable because of insufficient strength.

Small interfering RNAs inhibit infectious bursal disease virus replication in Vero cells.

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules are considered to be a promising antiviral therapeutics. This study was performed to analyze the application of siRNA against infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) replication. Two siRNAs were designed to target common coding sequences of four IBDV proteins.

Characterization and In Silico Analysis of Pregnancy-Associated Glycoprotein-1 Gene of Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins (PAGs) are trophoblastic proteins belonging to the Aspartic proteinase family secreted by different placental cells of many mammalian species. They play a pivotal role in placentogenesis, foetomaternal unit remodeling, and implantation. The identification of the genes encoding those proteins will be helpful to unravel the intricate embryogenomic functions during pregnancy establishment.

A Randomized Controlled Exploratory Evaluation of Standardized Ayurvedic Formulations in Symptomatic Osteoarthritis Knees: A Government of India NMITLI Project.

The multidisciplinary "New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative" Arthritis Project was undertaken to validate Ayurvedic medicines. Herbal formulations in popular use were selected by expert consensus and standardized using modern tools. Our clinical strategy evolved from simple exploratory evaluations to better powered statistically designed drug trials.

Cardiac imaging: current and emerging applications.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan have made big inroads as modalities used for evaluation of various pathologies of the heart. Cardiac MRI is typically used for perfusion and viability studies as well as to study various cardiomyopathies, valvular diseases and the pericardium. It has been used in the evaluation of congenital heart diseases over the last two decades.
