Objective: Environmental exposures exacerbate age-related pathologies, such as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Nanoparticulates, and specifically carbon nanomaterials, are a fast-growing contributor to the category of inhalable pollutants, whose risks to health are only now being unraveled. The current study assessed the exacerbating effect of age on multiwalled-carbon nanotube (MWCNT) exposure in young and old C57BL/6 and ApoE mice.

The mechanism(s) underlying MWCNT-induced toxicity to extrapulmonary sites are still being defined. MWCNT-induced serum-borne bioactivity appears to dysregulate systemic endothelial cell function.

We hypothesized that O3 exposures during early placental formation would lead to more adverse cardiovascular effects at term for exposed dams, as compared with late-term exposures. Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were exposed (4 h) to either filtered air (FA) or O3 (0.

While the vast majority of Drosophila flies feed on rotting fruit and other decaying matter, and are harmless to human activity, Drosophila suzukii, which has a morphologically modified ovipositor, is capable of colonizing live fruit that is still in the process of ripening, causing massive agricultural damage. Here, we conducted the first comparative analysis of this species and its close relatives, analysing both ovipositor structure and fruit susceptibility.

Objectives: The role of biomedical engineers (BMEs) has changed widely over the years, from managing a group of technicians to the planning of large installations and the management of medical technology countrywide. As the technology has advanced, the competence of BMEs has been challenged because it is no longer possible to be an expert in every component of the technology involved in running a hospital. Our approach has been to form a network of professionals that are experts in different fields related to medical technology, where work is coordinated to provide high quality services at the planning and execution stages of projects related to medical technology.

Limited and contradictory information exists regarding the prognosis of HIV/HTLV-I co-infection. Our goal was to estimate the effect of HTLV-I infection on mortality in HIV-infected patients at a HIV reference center in Peru. We studied a retrospective cohort of HIV-infected patients, who were exposed or unexposed to HTLV-I.

In this article we show the design of the Tonatiuh II robotic manipulator. This robotic assistant has an original electromechanical configuration and respects the laparoscope center of insertion as an invariant point for navigation in the work space. The manipulator went through several stages before reaching its final version.

Methods: An observational database was established at the HIV clinic of the Almenara Hospital in Lima, Peru in 1996. All 564 initially antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected persons (mean CD4 count of 91 cells/mm3) who received combination ART were followed over time.
Most candidate HIV vaccines are directed at priming memory T cell responses and are being evaluated on their effects on post acquisition viremia and/or disease progression. These vaccines are being studied in areas of high HIV-1 prevalence. As such, we evaluated the frequency of CD4+ T cell decline and time course of opportunistic infections of patients presenting at a major metropolitan hospital in Lima, Peru, an area where such candidate vaccines are being tested.

Objective: Few reports have described the clinical and pathologic characteristics of HIV-related systemic non-Hodgkin lymphoma (sNHL) in developing countries. We aimed to determine these characteristics from a national HIV reference center in Peru and to evaluate factors associated with survival.
Methods: A retrospective/prospective study of patients with HIV-related sNHL from the Guillermo Almenara General Hospital in Lima, Peru between 1993 and 2004.
