The detection of metabolic syndrome (MS) is use ful for identifying individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The objectives of the study were to describe the prevalence of MS in employees 40-65 years old, utilizing different definitions and to analyze the relation with educational level and gender by means of cross-sectional and multicenter study of different regions of Argentina. Compared MS definitions were: International Diabetes Federation, American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and National Cholesterol Education Program - Adults Treatment Panel III.

It was also analyzed which of them indicated a strong association with the presence and severity of the disease. Unlabelled: Argentinean women have one of the highest international mortality rates for cardiovascular disease and they are particularly vulnerable to eating pathologies. Cardiovascular risk is exacerbated in women with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), since high cholesterol concentrations have been widely reported.
Objectives: To compare blood cholesterol concentrations in AN patients with controls, and to correlate cholesterol with the body mass index (BMI), patient age, vomiting and tobacco.
Recent population studies in Southern Argentina have found a sharp rise in prevalence of overweight and obesity in both sexes and specially after fifty years of age. Hence, the obesity in itself was found associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and coronary heart disease, which have been demonstrated by angiography studies. The regulation of energy homeostasis is controlled by interactions between the central nervous system (neurotransmitters and neuropeptides) and the peripheric system (hormones) through very complex mechanisms.
