We report a case of a newborn with a prenatal diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), referred at 37 weeks of gestation. The fetal echocardiogram had shown classic morphologic aspects of HLHS with patent mitral valve and aortic valve atresia. The atrial septum was thickened and the foramen ovale (FO) appeared to be patent.

In this study, the effects of pH, CO(2), and flow pattern on the performance of a biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with plastic Pall rings and treating a H(2)S-polluted waste gas were investigated to establish the optimum operating conditions and design criteria. The CO(2) concentration had no effect on the biodegradation at H(2)S concentrations below 50 ppm. In the range of 50-127 ppm H(2)S, CO(2) concentrations between 865 and 1,087 ppm enhanced H(2)S removal, while higher concentrations of 1,309-4,009 ppm CO(2) slightly inhibited H(2)S removal.

The performance of laboratory scale methanol-degrading biofilters packed with lava rock was checked during almost 1 yr under different conditions. The biomass concentration and biomass adaptation of the inoculum dramatically affected the start-up and the performance of the systems during the first stages of operation. A fast start-up was obtained when using concentrated and adapted inocula, while diluted or non-adapted inocula proved to be much less efficient.

Two biofilters fed toluene-polluted air were inoculated with new fungal isolates of either Exophiala oligosperma or Paecilomyces variotii, while a third bioreactor was inoculated with a defined consortium composed of both fungi and a co-culture of a Pseudomonas strain and a Bacillus strain. Elimination capacities of 77 g m(-3) h(-1) and 55 g m(-3) h(-1) were reached in the fungal biofilters (with removal efficiencies exceeding 99%) in the case of, respectively, E. oligosperma and Paecilomyces variotii when feeding air with a relative humidity (RH) of 85%.

In sporadic colorectal tumours the BRAFV600E is associated with microsatellite instability (MSI-H) and inversely associated to KRAS mutations. Tumours from hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) patients carrying germline mutations in hMSH2 or hMLH1 do not show BRAFV600E, however no consistent data exist regarding KRAS mutation frequency and spectrum in HNPCC tumours. We investigated KRAS in 158 HNPCC tumours from patients with germline hMLH1, hMSH2 or hMSH6 mutations, 166 MSI-H and 688 microsatellite stable (MSS) sporadic carcinomas.

Low-strength saline wastewater may be generated by tourist facilities, industries and communities located in coastal areas. Sea salts, mostly chlorides, when present in wastewaters at high concentrations, can cause inhibition on biological treatment processes. In this study, a laboratory down-flow anaerobic fixed bed reactor (DFAFBR) was used for treating saline wastewater.

Several biofilters and biotrickling filters were used for the treatment of a mixture of formaldehyde and methanol; and their efficiencies were compared. Results obtained with three different inert filter bed materials (lava rock, perlite, activated carbon) suggested that the packing material had only little influence on the performance. The best results were obtained in a biotrickling filter packed with lava rock and fed a nutrient solution that was renewed weekly.

From August, 1996 to December, 1997, 293 of "dourado" specimens, Salminus maxillosus (Valencienes, 1840), of various sizes, were caught in Mogi-Guaçu River, Emas Falls, for hematologic studies. Total weight (Wt in g) and length (Lt in cm) were taken for each individual animal. Smears were prepared from blood samples and utilized for differential leukocyte counts (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, special granulocytic cell and immature cells).

The process of aging deeply influences morphological and functional parameters of peripheral nerves. The observations summarized here indicate that the deterioration of myelin occurring in the peripheral nerves during aging may be explained by the fall of the levels of the major peripheral myelin proteins [e.g.

Previous studies indicate that steroid hormones may be protective for Schwann cells and promote the expression of myelin proteins in the sciatic nerve of adult rats. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of progesterone (P), dihydroprogesterone (DHP), tetrahydroprogesterone (THP), testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and 5alpha-androstan-3alpha, 17beta-diol (3alpha-diol) on the morphological alterations of myelinated fibers in the sciatic nerve of 22-24-month-old male rats. The sciatic nerves of untreated old male rats, showed a general disorganization and a significant reduction in the density of myelinated fibers, compared to nerves from 3-month-old male rats.

Several methodologies were tested to supply nutrients to a downflow biofilter packed with perlite and used to treat toluene-polluted air. Despite the presence of an inorganic carrier, elimination capacities of up to around 60 g/m(3) per hour could be maintained when a basal medium, containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, was supplied once every fortnight or even once a month rather than once a week. Experimental results also indicated that the addition of vitamins or trace minerals to the basal aqueous medium hardly improved biofilter performance.

Both short-term and long-term biofiltration experiments were undertaken with a biofilter inoculated with a defined microbial consortium and treating an alkylbenzene mixture. The results obtained with such a biofilter in short-term experiments were very similar to those obtained with a biofilter inoculated with a non-defined mixed culture, in terms of maximum elimination capacities (70-72 g m(-3) h(-1)) and the corresponding removal efficiencies (>95%). However, in long-term experiments, a better performance was reached, with a maximum elimination capacity of 120 g m(-3) h(-1), corresponding to a removal efficiency >99% after 2 years of operation.

Complete remission induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in acute promyelocytic leukemia is short lived, and several consolidation chemotherapy courses usually are given to reduce the relapse rate. To assess the value of short-term intensive consolidation, 38 patients with newly diagnosed acute promyelocytic leukemia entered a prospective study in which induction therapy with ATRA immediately was followed by a single course of mitoxantrone plus high-dose cytarabine (3 g/m2 every 12 hours, days 1-4), with no further treatment. Complete remission was achieved in 31 patients (81.

After up to 21 days without food, adult male quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) lost about 45% of the initial body weight (100-150 g). As in naturally fast-adapted and larger birds, three phases were identified during prolonged fasting in quails. Phase I lasted 2-3 days and was characterized by a rapid decrease in the rate of body weight loss and high fat mobilization.

We have looked for LOH, mutation, and expression of p53 in a series of 56 primary gastric carcinomas, using Southern blotting, constant denaturant gel electrophoresis (CDGE), direct sequencing, and immunohistochemistry. Two hundred-four lymph node metastases from 36 of these cases were also studied by immunohistochemistry. Loss of constitutional heterozygosity for the p53 locus was detected in five of 16 informative cases; in four of these cases there was a concurrent point mutation at the retained allele.
