Introduction: Hemoglobin (Hb) estimation in blood donors is conducted using capillary samples on portable hemoglobinometers, representing measurement methods in practice. The reference standard is conducted using a venous sample on a hematology analyzer, representing the mentor measurement method or the true value. The correction involves the calculation of the secondary adjustment factor (SAF) to mitigate the difference between the two values.

Background And Objectives: Great variations may be observed in the haemoglobin (Hb) content of packed red blood cell (PRBC) units prepared by different methods. This study aimed to assess the Hb increment in thalassaemia major patients transfused with leucoreduced PRBCs (LPRBCs) prepared by two different methods: (i) standard leucoreduced PRBCs (SLPRBCs) and (ii) leucoreduced PRBCs prepared by a new method where leucoreduction of whole blood is done first (NLPRBCs).

Materials And Methods: This prospective, randomized, controlled trial included 80 adult thalassaemia major patients who were randomized into two groups of 40 each.

Article Synopsis
  • Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) can lead to low calcium levels due to the use of Anticoagulant Citrate Dextrose Solution A, and adding different concentrations of calcium gluconate to human serum albumin may help prevent this issue.* -
  • A study comparing two groups of TPE procedures found that while intraprocedural calcium levels were similar, post-procedural ionized calcium was significantly lower in the group with less calcium, leading to more cases of symptomatic hypocalcemia and vasovagal reactions.* -
  • The results suggest that using a higher concentration of calcium gluconate (18.6 mg of elemental calcium/100 ml) is safer and more effective in maintaining calcium levels during

Donor lymphocyte infusions (DLIs) are often recommended products after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant to increase graft - versus - leukemia effect. More success rate of DLI has been reported in relapsed posttransplant chronic myeloid leukemia. Whatever the indication for DLI, mortality related to post-DLI infusion is 5%-20%, and more than one-third of patients will develop acute and/or chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) after DLI.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of plasma exchange (PE) compared to intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) as treatments for acute attacks of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), focusing on disability and daily living improvement.
  • - Researchers enrolled 43 NMOSD patients, dividing them into two groups: one received PE and steroids, while the other received IVIg and steroids, tracking their progress using disability and daily living scores, along with antibody levels over time.
  • - Results showed significant improvements in disability and daily living scores for both treatment groups, but no significant differences between them; however, PE led to a notable decrease in anti-AQP4 antibody levels, suggesting it may be a more effective

Background: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) restriction plays an important role in the susceptibility to alloimmunization against red blood cell (RBC) antigens. The prevalence of anti-D alloimmunization in RhD negative pregnancy is still quite high in our population. Thus, we planned this study to determine the association of HLA-DRB1 alleles with anti-D alloimmunization in RhD negative pregnant women.

Isaacs syndrome is a disease characterized by nerve hyperexcitability and pseudomyotonia and treated with immunomodulatory and symptomatic therapy approaches. Here, we report a case of anti-(leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1) antibody-positive patient diagnosed as Isaacs syndrome and accomplished a nearly complete response to only four sessions of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). Our experience suggests that TPE along with other immunomodulatory agents may be beneficial and well-tolerated approach in patient with Isaacs syndrome.
