Article Synopsis
  • Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) was evaluated as an alternative to intravascular imaging techniques for assessing plaque pathology in patients with chronic coronary syndrome.
  • The study involved 70 patients and compared CCTA with near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) to analyze atheroma burden and composition, focusing on the accuracy of detecting lipid-rich plaques.
  • Results showed that CCTA had limitations in accurately measuring plaque dimensions and composition, leading to potential issues in planning for coronary interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • The BYPASS-CTCA trial found that using computed tomography cardiac angiography (CTCA) prior to invasive coronary angiography (ICA) in patients with previous bypass surgery reduces procedure time and the risk of kidney injury, improving patient satisfaction.
  • In this study, 688 patients were divided into two groups: one receiving CTCA before ICA and the other receiving ICA alone, with follow-up averaging 3 years.
  • Results showed that although benefits like being angina-free and improved quality of life were seen at 3 months, long-term outcomes showed CTCA/ICA patients had lower imaging resource use and fewer major adverse cardiac events compared to those who only had ICA.

Introduction: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency in children, often requiring imaging for confirmation due to diverse presentations. While computed tomography scan is favored in many centers for its sensitivity, it comes with radiation exposure and higher costs. Ultrasonography, being radiation-free and cost-effective, is gaining popularity, especially in pediatric cases.

Background: Coronary angioplasty and stent insertion is a first line treatment for patients with coronary artery disease, however it is complicated in the long-term by in-stent restenosis (ISR) in a proportion of patients with an associated morbidity. Despite this, currently there are no effective treatments available for the prevention of ISR. Repeat percutaneous revascularisation carries increased risks of major adverse cardiovascular events and a higher incidence of stent failure.

  • Cerebrovascular events (CVEs) can happen during or after a procedure called TAVR, which replaces a heart valve, and can lead to serious health problems.
  • Even though strokes have become less common since TAVR started, they’re still a major concern because TAVR is being used more often.
  • New devices and treatments are being tested to help prevent CVEs, but current options may not reduce stroke risk enough, and there are concerns about bleeding from the medication used.

Article Synopsis
  • Data on radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is limited, mostly based on case reports, and this study reflects the experience from a tertiary care center in India with 33 patients monitored over several years.
  • In the study, 24 patients initially underwent surgery with varying outcomes: 12 achieved early remission, 3 delayed remission, and 9 exhibited persistent disease over an average follow-up of 5 years.
  • RFA was used as a treatment for 10 patients, primarily as a first-line option, with 7 achieving remission at the last follow-up; complications were minimal, suggesting RFA can be as effective as surgery for managing TIO but may require additional treatment

Urinary-cutaneous fistulas are typically treated by pediatric urologists and typically arise after surgical interventions. The three atypical cases of acquired urethrocutaneous fistula that we present here have variously resulted from an untreated periurethral abscess to complications of an initial urethral calculi. To prevent an intraoperative surprise, learning from our cases put emphasis on the importance of early intervention and a high index of suspicion for underlying calculi.

The 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor (5-HTR), a subtype of serotonin receptor, is a ligand-gated ion channel crucial in mediating fast synaptic transmission in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This receptor significantly influences various neurological activities, encompassing neurotransmission, mood regulation, and cognitive processing; hence, it may serve as an innovative target for neurological disorders. Multiple studies have revealed promising results regarding the beneficial effects of these phytoconstituents and extracts on conditions such as nausea, vomiting, neuropathic pain depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's disease, cognition, epilepsy, sleep, and dyskinesia via modulation of 5-HTR in the pathophysiology of neurological disorder.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for advancements in risk assessment and management strategies. Although significant progress has been made recently, identifying and managing apparently healthy individuals at a higher risk of developing atherosclerosis and those with subclinical atherosclerosis still poses significant challenges. Traditional risk assessment tools have limitations in accurately predicting future events and fail to encompass the complexity of the atherosclerosis trajectory.

Article Synopsis
  • A routine invasive strategy is normally recommended for high-risk patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTE-ACS), but patients with a history of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery were not included in significant trials informing these guidelines.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to analyze outcomes such as mortality and hospitalization among patients with prior CABG receiving either routine invasive or conservative treatment for NSTE-ACS.
  • The findings indicate that a routine invasive strategy does not offer any benefits over conservative treatment in terms of all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality, myocardial infarction, or cardiac-related hospitalization for patients with prior CABG.

Innovations in resistive switching devices constitute a core objective for the development of ultralow-power computing devices. Forming-free resistive switching is a type of resistive switching that eliminates the need for an initial high voltage for the formation of conductive filaments and offers promising opportunities to overcome the limitations of traditional resistive switching devices. Here, we demonstrate mixed charge state oxygen vacancy-engineered electroforming-free resistive switching in NiFeO (NFO) thin films, fabricated as asymmetric Ti/NFO/Pt heterostructures, for the first time.
