The development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to a need for alternatives to antibiotics for growth promotion and disease prevention in poultry production. The helical polysaccharide beta-1,3/1,6-glucan is derived from the cell wall of Saccharomyces cervisiae and has immunomodulating activities. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of 2 supplementation programs with a commercial beta-1,3/1,6-glucan product to protect broiler chicks from experimental respiratory challenge with Escherichia coli.

In view of the alleged effect of humic acid (HA) on growth plate arthrosis in humans, we sought to find if poultry tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is caused by HA that can occur as a ground water contaminant. In 2 separate trials, broiler chickens were fed different concentrations of HA added to their diet for 4 and 5 wk. The effects of these treatments were measured by general health indices such as growth, feed conversion ratio, relative organ weights, blood differential count, serum chemistry, TD index, and bone biomechanical strength.

Hop is an unusual homeodomain protein that was first identified in the developing heart where it functions downstream of Nkx2.5 to modulate cardiac gene expression. Hop functions through interactions with histone deacetylase (HDAC) 2 to mediate repression of cardiac-specific genes, and recent studies show that HDAC activity and HDAC2 expression are decreased in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Long term D-penicillamine therapy, especially when used to treat Wilson's disease has been shown to cause elastosis perforans serpiginosa, pseudoxanthoma elasticum perforans and other degenerative dermatoses. We report a 23-year-old male patient who presented with multiple firm papules, nodules over the neck, axillae, front of elbows for five years. He was a known case of Wilson's disease on long-term treatment with penicillamine for the past 12 years.

A synthetic methodology using double carbonyl substitution of the starting tricarbonyl complex [3,3,3-(CO)(3)-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(11)] (1) with 2 mol equiv of the reagent Me(3)NO has been employed to afford ruthenacarborane complexes with chelating N-donor ligands. Three of these complexes, [3-CO-3,3-[kappa(2)-4,4'-R(2)-2,2'-(NC(5)H(3))(2)]-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(11)] (3a, R = H; 3b, R = (CH(2))(8)Me; 3c, R = Bu(t)), comprise 2,2'-bipyridyl ligands with hydrogen, n-nonyl, or t-butyl groups in the 4,4'-positions of the rings, respectively. Photophysical analysis revealed no substantial luminescent activity, but the complexes are electrochemically active, undergoing sequential (reversible and quasi-reversible) one-electron reductions, the second of which likely precipitating a ligand displacement.

The title compound, C(21)H(24)N(3)O(4)P, is a self-complementary hydrogen-bond (HB) building unit, with (P=)O as the primary HB acceptor and N-H as the HB donor. Each of the four crystallographically distinct and nearly parallel molecules of the unit cell has a net dipole moment along the P=O bond direction and all of the dipoles are directed in the same general crystallographic direction. Head-to-tail N-H.

The activity of GATA factors is regulated, in part, at the level of protein-protein interactions. LIM domain proteins, first defined by the zinc finger motifs found in the Lin11, Isl-1, and Mec-3 proteins, act as coactivators of GATA function in both hematopoietic and cardiovascular tissues. We have identified a novel GATA-LIM interaction between GATA6 and LMCD1/dyxin.

In the preceding paper several compounds were reported as potent apical sodium-codependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) inhibitors. Since the primary site for active bile acid reabsorption is via ASBT, which is localized on the luminal surface of the distal ileum, we reasoned that a nonsystemic inhibitor would be desirable to minimize or eliminate potential systemic side effects of an absorbed drug. To ensure bioequivalency and product stability, it was also essential that we identify a nonhygroscopic inhibitor in its most stable crystalline form.

Elevated plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are a major risk factor for atherosclerosis leading to coronary artery disease (CAD), which remains the main cause of mortality in Western society. We believe that by preventing the reabsorption of bile acids, a minimally absorbed apical sodium-codependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) inhibitor would lower the serum cholesterol without the potential systemic side effects of an absorbed drug. A series of novel benzothiepines (3R,3R'-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-5-aryl-1-benzothiepin-4-ol 1,1-dioxides) were synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit the apical sodium dependent bile acid transport (ASBT)-mediated uptake of [(14)C]taurocholate (TC) in H14 cells.

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a metabolic cartilage disease of young poultry in which endochondral bone formation is disrupted leading to the retention of a non-calcified, avascular plug of cartilage in the tibial growth plate. Chicks aged 7 days were fed either a control diet or one containing thiram 100 ppm for 48 h to induce TD. Cell multiplication in the growth plate was determined thereafter with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labelling, and metabolic changes by measuring alkaline phosphatase (ALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), and glutathione (GSH) activities.

An enantiospecific route to the previously unreported 1,6-difunctionalized dodecahydrobenz[f]indene ring system is described. Optically pure Hajos-Parrish ketone is used as the building block for preparation of a 6-methyleneinden-5-ol. This allylic alcohol is then utilized in a Claisen rearrangement under Johnson's conditions to introduce a side chain that is further modified and cyclized to produce the benz[f]indene ring system.

Orientation with respect to gravity is essential for the survival of complex organisms. The gravity receptor is one of the phylogenetically oldest sensory systems, and special adaptations that enhance sensitivity to gravity are highly conserved. The fish inner ear contains three large extracellular biomineral particles, otoliths, which have evolved to transduce the force of gravity into neuronal signals.

Allylic hydroxy phosphonates and their derivatives can be interconverted by using cross metathesis with second generation Grubbs catalyst. The absolute stereochemistry of the starting phosphonate is conserved in the product. Cross metathesis reaction of the acrolein-derived phosphonate 2a yields a series of functionalized allylic hydroxy phosphonates.

A new glycosylation strategy that allows chemoselective activation of the S-thiazolyl (STaz) moiety of a glycosyl donor over the temporarily deactivated glycosyl acceptor, bearing the same anomeric group, has been developed. This deactivation is achieved by engaging of the STaz moiety of the glycosyl acceptor into a stable palladium(II) complex. Therefore, obtained disaccharides are then released from the complex by simple ligand exchange.
