We systematically reviewed the evidence from animal studies assessing the effects of pentoxifylline on neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The PubMed, EMBASE, EMCARE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched for randomized and quasi randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in December 2023 to determine the effects of pentoxifylline in animal models of HIE. The quality of the included studies was assessed via the SYRCLE risk of bias (ROB) tool.

Identifying and quantifying co-dependence between financial instruments is a key challenge for researchers and practitioners in the financial industry. Linear measures such as the Pearson correlation are still widely used today, although their limited explanatory power is well known. In this paper, we present a much more general framework for assessing co-dependencies by identifying linear and nonlinear causalities in the complex system of financial markets.

Imaging mass spectrometry is a powerful technology enabling spatial metabolomics, yet metabolites can be assigned only to a fraction of the data generated. METASPACE-ML is a machine learning-based approach addressing this challenge which incorporates new scores and computationally-efficient False Discovery Rate estimation. For training and evaluation, we use a comprehensive set of 1710 datasets from 159 researchers from 47 labs encompassing both animal and plant-based datasets representing multiple spatial metabolomics contexts derived from the METASPACE knowledge base.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation, oxidative injury, and gut dysbiosis contribute to necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), and plant-derived substances are traditionally used for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects.
  • A systematic review analyzed 16 studies involving randomized controlled trials focusing on the impact of plant-derived interventions in animal models of NEC, with outcomes such as mortality rates and intestinal injury severity.
  • Results showed that these plant-based substances significantly reduced mortality and the incidence of NEC, while also improving inflammation and oxidative stress markers, suggesting potential for developing preventive food supplements for NEC in preterm infants.

Purpose: Ductus venosus (DV) Doppler velocimetry reflects fetal cardiac function. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is assumed to impair cardiac function due to fetal hyperglycemia. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of DV Doppler to predict an adverse perinatal outcome (APO) in term pregnancies with GDM.

microbeMASST, a taxonomically informed mass spectrometry (MS) search tool, tackles limited microbial metabolite annotation in untargeted metabolomics experiments. Leveraging a curated database of >60,000 microbial monocultures, users can search known and unknown MS/MS spectra and link them to their respective microbial producers via MS/MS fragmentation patterns. Identification of microbe-derived metabolites and relative producers without a priori knowledge will vastly enhance the understanding of microorganisms' role in ecology and human health.

Background: Compassion fatigue is a significant issue considering its consequences including negative feelings, impaired cognition, and increased risk of long-term morbidities. We aimed to assess current evidence on the effects of interventions for compassion fatigue in healthcare providers (HCP).

Methods: We used the Cochrane methodology for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) for conducting and reporting this review.

Model-free and data-driven prediction of tipping point transitions in nonlinear dynamical systems is a challenging and outstanding task in complex systems science. We propose a novel, fully data-driven machine learning algorithm based on next-generation reservoir computing to extrapolate the bifurcation behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems using stationary training data samples. We show that this method can extrapolate tipping point transitions.

  • * Increasing the concentration of magnesium oxide (MgO) in the bio-glass up to 4 mol% improves the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) layers, cell viability over 225%, and significantly inhibits bacterial growth (E. coli by 65% and S. aureus by 75%).
  • * The MGO_4 variant effectively loads and releases the drug Dexamethasone (DEX), achieving 80% loading and 70% release over

Probiotics are known to decrease incidences of necrotising enterocolitis, feeding intolerance, late-onset sepsis, and mortality in preterm infants. Administering an adequate dose is important for optimizing the benefits and safety of probiotics. We conducted a systematic review to assess the effect of probiotic dose escalation on clinical outcomes and gut microbiota in preterm neonates.

Hybrid reservoir computing combines purely data-driven machine learning predictions with a physical model to improve the forecasting of complex systems. In this study, we investigate in detail the predictive capabilities of three different architectures for hybrid reservoir computing: the input hybrid (IH), output hybrid (OH), and full hybrid (FH), which combines IH and OH. By using nine different three-dimensional chaotic model systems and the high-dimensional spatiotemporal chaotic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system, we demonstrate that all hybrid reservoir computing approaches significantly improve the prediction results, provided that the model is sufficiently accurate.

Reservoir computers are powerful machine learning algorithms for predicting nonlinear systems. Unlike traditional feedforward neural networks, they work on small training data sets, operate with linear optimization, and therefore require minimal computational resources. However, the traditional reservoir computer uses random matrices to define the underlying recurrent neural network and has a large number of hyperparameters that need to be optimized.

Aim: We introduced routine probiotic supplementation (RPS) of preterm infants in June 2012. We previously reported that RPS reduced the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and mortality in such infants. In this study, we assessed if the benefits of RPS were sustained for infants in the current era.

In this experimental paper, we demonstrate that turbulence can develop in a fluid system with background damping. For that purpose, we analyze dust acoustic waves, self-excited in a fluid complex plasma where the motion of individual microparticles was recorded with a high-speed video camera. We use the Wiener-Khinchin theorem to calculate the kinetic spectrum during different phases of the highly nonlinear periodic wave motion and show that a turbulent cascade develops at the phases of highest particle compression.

Background: Fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) has been shown to improve survival of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). However, there are concerns that FETO may lead to tracheomegaly, tracheomalacia and related complications.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted to estimate the prevalence of symptomatic tracheal complications in infants who underwent FETO for CDH.

Here, we have examined the structure dependent magnetic properties of CoMnOnanoparticles synthesized through a facile coprecipitation technique and are characterized using x-ray diffractometer, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), RAMAN spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurements. Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction pattern reveals the coexistence of 91.

The prediction of complex nonlinear dynamical systems with the help of machine learning has become increasingly popular in different areas of science. In particular, reservoir computers, also known as echo-state networks, turned out to be a very powerful approach, especially for the reproduction of nonlinear systems. The reservoir, the key component of this method, is usually constructed as a sparse, random network that serves as a memory for the system.
