Serious Games, Gamification, and Serious Mental Illness: A Scoping Review.

Objective: The use of serious games and gamification to promote learning has a long history. More recently, serious games and gamification have been used in clinical settings to promote treatment and recovery. Yet there is little evidence to support their use with populations that experience serious mental illness.

Can non-clinical community placements enhance medical students' understanding of the social determinants of ill health?

Objectives: Teaching the social determinants of health using classroom methods and medical settings is not effectual, yet few institutions require students to undertake placements in non-clinical settings. We sought to understand through qualitative investigation how non-clinical community placements contributed to students' understanding of health disparities.

Study Design: Qualitative methods.

Congenital tuberculosis in an extremely preterm infant conceived after in vitro fertilization: case report.

Background: Congenital tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis. The diagnosis is often delayed, especially in preterm neonates because of the non-specific clinical presentation and the lack of awareness of maternal disease prior to pregnancy.

Case Presentation: We report a case of congenital tuberculosis in an infant born at 24 weeks of gestation to a mother who presented with uncontrolled seizures during preterm labor.

Responding to the increased genetic risk associated with customary consanguineous marriage among minority ethnic populations: lessons from local innovations in England.

Populations practising customary consanguineous marriage have a higher incidence of autosomal recessive genetic disorders than those in which reproductive partners are usually unrelated. In the absence of any national-level response, English service developments to address the additional needs of families living with or at risk of such disorders have been locally led. These interventions remain in their infancy here, as elsewhere in Europe, and important questions remain regarding how appropriate, effective and sustainable responses can be operationalised in practice.

Health and pink-collar work.

Background: In recent years, there has been a decline in the manufacturing sector of the UK economy with a corresponding growth of service-orientated pink-collar jobs in some regions. While the health outcomes of white- and blue-collar workers are well-established, less is known about this emerging pink-collar group.

Aims: To outline the health of pink-collar workers in comparison to their white-collar counterparts across a range of indicators.

Associations Between Family of Origin Climate, Relationship Self-Regulation, and Marital Outcomes.

Using dyadic data from 961 married couples from the Relationship Evaluation Questionnaire project, the current study explored the direct association between family of origin climate and marital outcomes and the indirect association via relationship self-regulation (RSR). Results from the actor-partner interdependence model analysis indicated that family of origin climate was positively associated with marital stability directly and indirectly via the effects of RSR and marital satisfaction for both men and women. Results suggest that the experience one has in their family of origin is associated with their marital outcomes through their RSR.

Detection and localization of bile duct leaks after cholecystectomy using Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR cholangiography: retrospective study of 16 patients.

Objective: To determine if gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) cholangiography can detect and localize bile duct leaks in postcholecystectomy patients.

Material And Methods: Four blinded independent radiologists performed a retrospective review of 16 consecutive patients who underwent MR cholangiography with intravenous Gd-EOB-DTPA for the evaluation of possible biliary leak. Image quality, ductal opacification, and presence and location of any bile leak were evaluated.

Veterinary medical student well-being: depression, stress, and personal relationships.

Existing research consistently connects higher relationship satisfaction with improved psychological and physical functioning. Investigations focusing on relational satisfaction within veterinary medicine have been sparse. This study evaluated 240 veterinary medical students at Kansas State University.

Stanford type A aortic dissection with pulmonary arterial intramural hematoma and pulmonary hemorrhage.

A rare complication of a Stanford type A aortic dissection is extension along the pulmonary arteries. We present a case that shows main and right pulmonary artery intramural hematoma and pulmonary hemorrhage in an 80-year-old woman who presented with a type A Stanford aortic dissection. The 11-month follow-up multidetector CT angiogram for this patient showed that the right pulmonary artery had become aneurysmal.

Developing a multidisciplinary approach within the ED towards domestic violence presentations.

Aim: To improve the detection and quality of care of patients who attend the emergency department (ED) with confirmed or suspected domestic abuse (DA).

Design: A quality improvement report on the design, implementation and evaluation of a specialised service and structured training programme to detect and manage DA presentations within an emergency medicine department.

Setting: The study was set in the ED at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, UK.

Making a difference in making miracles: common roadblocks to miracle question effectiveness.

This article describes a clinical investigation of student-therapists' use of the miracle question (MQ). Data used for this project came from transcribed role-play videotapes by six student-therapists. Transcripts were coded, and findings highlight challenges that prevent beginning therapists from effectively using the MQ.

Attitudes toward dating violence among college students in mainland China: an exploratory study.

This study investigates attitudes toward psychological and physical dating violence among college students in mainland China (n = 245). The results of this study indicate that among our sample of college students in mainland China, men and women were relatively similar in their attitudes toward male perpetrated and female perpetrated physical dating violence and female perpetrated psychological dating violence. As has been found in previous research, men and women in our sample were more accepting of female perpetrated physical and psychological dating violence than male perpetrated physical and psychological dating violence.

Characterization of glycolytic initial metabolites and enzyme activities in developing sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds.

Unlike other oilseeds (e.g. Arabidopsis), developing sunflower seeds do not accumulate a lot of starch and they rely on the sucrose that comes from the mother plant to synthesise lipid precursors.

Type 1 diabetes: children and adolescents' knowledge and questions.

Aim: This paper is a report of a study conducted to describe what children and adolescents who have type 1 diabetes know and want to know about the disease.

Background: Research indicates that young people's knowledge of diabetes may minimize their health complications, because with greater knowledge they may engage in more effective management practices and adherence.

Methods: In this qualitative study, a purposive sample of 58 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes were interviewed in 2005 about what they knew and wanted to know about their disease.

The relationship between migraine and mental disorders in a population-based sample.

Objective: There is emerging evidence from clinical and community samples to suggest that migraines are associated with mental disorders. The present study utilized a large population-based sample to investigate the association between physician-diagnosed migraine and mental disorders.

Method: Data were from the German Health Survey conducted between 1997 and 1999 (N=4181, response rate 61.

Evidence for the involvement of tetrahydrofolate in the demethylation of nicotine by Nicotiana plumbaginifolia cell-suspension cultures.

The conversion of nicotine to nornicotine by Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv. cells was investigated by analysing the redistribution of label during feeding experiments with (R,S)-[2H- methyl]nicotine, (R,S)-[13C- methyl]nicotine and (R,S)-[14C- methyl]nicotine, and the results show that the N-methyl group of nicotine can be recycled into primary metabolism. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of ethanolic extracts of cells grown in the presence of (R,S)-[13C- methyl]nicotine, using 1H-13C correlation spectroscopy (HMQC, HMBC), revealed the presence of [3-13C]serine and [13C- methyl]methionine.

An in vitro investigation into conformational aspects of gabapentin.

Conformational analysis of constrained cyclohexane systems was pioneered fifty years ago by Barton and Hassel. We now report an investigation based on a conformational analysis of a number of novel cyclohexane based Gabapentin analogues coupled with their in vitro evaluation at the Gabapentin binding site. These data are used to propose a possible binding conformation for Gabapentin.

Screening older patients for obstructive airways disease in a semi-rural practice.

Background: Obstructive airways disease in older patients is reported to be not only common, but frequently overlooked and untreated by general practitioners. This study examines the value of screening elderly patients in a large semi-rural general practice for potentially treatable asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methods: A random sample of 353 patients aged 60-75 years attended a nurse run screening clinic for pulmonary function testing, serial peak flow recording, and completion of a symptom questionnaire.
