Management of acute urinary retention: a worldwide survey of 6074 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Objectives: To evaluate the management of acute urinary retention (AUR) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in real-life practice. To identify predictors of successful trial without catheter (TWOC).

Materials And Methods: In all, 6074 men catheterized for painful AUR were enrolled in a prospective, cross-sectional survey conducted in public and private urology practices in France, Asia, Latin America, Algeria and the Middle East.

Treatment of 161 men with symptomatic late onset hypogonadism with long-acting parenteral testosterone undecanoate: effects on body composition, lipids, and psychosexual complaints.

Material And Method: A multicenter observational study looking at safety by adverse events (AEs) incidence, efficacy by changes in International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS), quality of life index (QOL), sexual function using Danish Prostate Symptom Score (DAN-PSS sex), and flow rates. Patients were allocated to receive alfuzosin (Xatral XL) 10 mg once daily tablet along with a meal for 6 months.

Increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED): results of the second epidemiological study on sexual activity and prevalence of ED in Thai males.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate changes in sexual activity and the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in Thai males. In addition, the treatment-seeking behaviour of Thai patients suffering from ED is also investigated.

Materials And Methods: In a cross sectional study using a standardized questionnaire with a multi-stage stratified random sampling, 2,269 men aged 40-70 were interviewed.

Efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil in Asian men with erectile dysfunction.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil, a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, in men of Asian ethnicity with erectile dysfunction (ED).

Methods: In this prospective, double-blind, multinational study, Asian men were randomized to receive vardenafil (10 mg) or placebo (4:1 ratio) for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy variables were the International Index of Erectile Function erectile function domain (IIEF-EF), and Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) questions related to penetration and intercourse completion.

Laparoscopic management of a single system ectopic ureterocele with transitional cell carcinoma in the distal ureter.

Single system ectopic ureterocele associated with transitional cell carcinoma in the ureter has not been described previously. Only two cases of transitional cell carcinoma in a single ectopic ureter have been reported in the published literature. With the development of minimally invasive surgery, we report the first case of single system ectopic ureterocele with transitional cell carcinoma in the distal ureter that was successfully managed by laparoscopic surgery.

Penile enhancement using a porcine small intestinal submucosa graft in a rat model.

Several biodegradable materials have been experimented for penile enhancement, but none show the potential for clinical use. This study was designed to use porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) augmenting the normal tunica albuginea to increase the functional girth of the rat penis. In all, 20 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats constituted the study population.

Correlation between symptoms and urodynamic findings in Thai female patients with urinary incontinence.

Objective: To determine the accuracy of a urinary incontinence questionnaire in the diagnosis of various types of urinary incontinence classified according to the results of multichannel urodynamic testing.

Material And Method: Between May 2000 and April 2004, 129 women with symptoms of urinary incontinence were interviewed using a urinary incontinence questionnaire consisting of 12 urinary symptoms questions. Various patient demographic and other descriptive data were also collected.

The association between erectile function and severity of lower urinary tract symptoms.

It is unclear whether the erectile dysfunction (ED) that frequently occurs with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) may have a common causative factor: sympathetic overactivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between ED and LUTS. From June 1998 to March 2000, 75 male patients, presenting with LUTS, enrolled into the present study.

Solitary pancreatic metastasis from renal cell carcinoma 14 years after nephrectomy: a case report.

We report a case of solitary pancreatic metastasis from renal cell carcinoma which occurred 12 years after radical nephrectomy. The patient had no symptom. The lesion was unrecognized until 2 years later.

Follow-up of long-term treatment with clean intermittent catheterization for neurogenic bladder in children.

Objectives: To assess the results of long-term clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) treatment for neurogenic bladder in children born with myelomeningocele, and to compare the long-term results between the early treatment group (< 1 year old) and late treatment group (> 3 years old).

Methods: Thirty-six paediatric patients with myelomeningocele who were treated in the first year of life (Group 1) and 31 cases who were treated after the age of 3 years (Group 2) were followed regularly for at least 11 years. All medical records were reviewed and long-term results of treatment, including increases in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine, development of hydronephrosis, recurrent upper urinary tract infection, and the number of augmentation cystoplasties needed, were noted.

The Aging Males' Symptoms rating scale: cultural and linguistic validation into Thai.

The interest in clinically investigating the health-related quality of life and symptoms of aging males has increased in recent years. Recently, a couple of validated questionnaires have been proposed for either screening, diagnosing and assessing response to therapy. Among these, the Aging Males' Symptom (AMS) questionnaire has been one of the most accepted questionnaires used in aging male clinics worldwide.

The efficacy and safety of oral sildenafil in Thai men with erectile dysfunction: a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, flexible-dose study.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, flexible-dose study in Thai men with erectile dysfunction of broad-spectrum etiology and more than 6 months' duration.

Material And Method: 125 patients aged 26 to 77 years were randomized at 4 centers in Thailand to receive either sildenafil citrate (50 mg initially, increased if necessary up to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg depending on efficacy and/or tolerability) (n = 63) or a matching placebo (n = 62) taken on an 'as needed' basis approximately 1 hour prior to anticipated sexual activity for a period of 12 weeks. Efficacy was assessed by the patients' responses to the 15-question International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), to questions on the event log of sexual activity, and to the global efficacy assessment question concerning improvement in erections.

Ureteral calculi during pregnancy: review of the management at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Objective: To review our experiences with diagnosis and management of symptomatic ureteral calculi complicating pregnancy.

Material And Method: Medical records of all pregnant patients documented with symptomatic ureteral calculi treated at the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital from 1990 to 2000 were reviewed. Presenting symptoms, diagnostic studies and management of ureteral stone were evaluated.

Evaluation of transurethal alprostadil for safety and efficacy in men with erectile dysfunction.

A multicenter study conducted in 5 trial centers, for the safety and efficacy of transurethral alprostadil (Pellet) in 90 subjects. The end results show quite good and the product was satisfactory and safe for all ages. Although there are multiple side effects that seemed to discourage the participants and caused them to dropout, MUSE does work but needs good understanding of the use of the device.

Vesicourethral strictures after radical prostatectomy: review of treatment and outcome.

Objective: Stricture of the vesicourethral anastomosis is a complication after radical prostatectomy. Urethral dilatation, internal urethrotomy, transurethral resection or laser therapy have been reported as the treatment for this complication. The objective of this study was to present our experience with the management of the vesicourethral stricture.

Hemospermia: review of the management with 5 years follow-up.

Objective: To review our experience with hemospermia and a long term follow-up.

Material And Method: Medical records of patients with hemospermia treated at the Division of Urology, Ramathibodi Hospital between 1993 and 1995 were reviewed. Clinical presentation, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and long term follow-up were noted.

Pubovaginal sling for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence: experience of 100 cases at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of pubovaginal sling procedure for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.

Material And Method: From September 1997 to January 2000, one hundred consecutive patients with urodynamically proven stress incontinence had a pubovaginal sling procedure performed. Operative technique, intraoperative and post-operative complications, voiding patterns, residual urine as well as the follow-up course were reviewed.

Ejaculatory duct obstruction in the infertile male: experience of 7 cases at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Objective: To study the clinical presentations, management, outcomes as well as pregnancy rate of ejaculatory duct obstruction treated at the Division of Urology, Ramathibodi Hospital.

Material And Method: This retrospective study was done from 1980 to 1999 and information from the medical records of the patients of ejaculatory duct obstruction was obtained. Phone and mail were used for long-term follow-up.

Risk factors for stress urinary incontinence in middle aged and elderly Thai women.

Objective: To determine risk factors of stress urinary incontinence in middle aged and elderly Thai women.

Material And Method: Between March 1999 and January 2000, 46 women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with the mean age of 49.05 years old and 168 continent women with the mean age of 49.

Irrigation of the distal vas deferens during vasectomy: does it accelerate the post-vasectomy sperm-free rate?

A prospective, non-randomized, partially blinded, controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of irrigation with normal saline solution (NSS) during no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) compared with NSV alone in 62 men. In the NSS irrigation group, an Angiocath 24-gauge needle was inserted into the distal vas lumen, and 20 mL NSS solution was used to irrigate the vas manually on both sides. Post-operative follow-up included urine samples collected immediately and semen samples for sperm count at 2, 6 and 12 weeks post-vasectomy.

Stricture of the male urethra: 29 years experience of 323 cases.

The authors reported 323 cases of male urethral stricture managed at Ramathibodi Hospital from 1969 to 1998 (29 years period). Etiology included traumatic causes 237 (73%) and post infection 54 cases (16%). The managements were urethroplasties 281 cases (87%), urethrotomy 21 cases (6%) and dilatation 21 cases (6%).

Urethral diverticulum in females: 25 years experience at Ramathibodi Hospital.

We retrospectively reviewed the urethral diverticulum in females from 1972 to 1997. Sixty seven patients were found in this study. Nine per cent were nulliparous and the rest were multiparous with the mean of 2.

Vesico-vaginal fistula: experience of 230 cases.

We reviewed 230 cases of vesico-vaginal fistula in Ramathibodi Hospital from 1969 to 1997. The cases of fistula included 164 cases after transabdominal hysterectomies, 5 cases after anterior colporrhaphies, 8 cases after radical hysterectomy, 23 cases after vaginal hysterectomy, 10 cases after prolonged or traumatic birth, 9 cases after radiation for cervical carcinoma, 7 cases of cervical cancer invasion, 2 cases after suprapubic cystolithotomy and 2 cases after pelvic fracture. Most of them were referred from other hospitals.

The usage of Andrographis paniculata following Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).

One hundred consecutive cases with renal stones less than 3 cm in size and normal renal function underwent ESWL from January to March 1994. Out of these, 50 were given Andrographis paniculata tablets (250 mg), 4 tablests tid, 25 were given cotrimoxazole 2 tablets bid and 25 received norfloxacin 200 mg bid, started immediately after ESWL and continued for 5 days. All tolerated the treatment well and none had complications.
