Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies indicate that host genetic factors, particularly HLA-G molecules, may play a significant role in determining the severity of COVID-19 effects among individuals.
  • The study compared immune-genetic characteristics of 381 COVID-19 patients and 420 healthy controls from Sardinia, revealing that certain gene polymorphisms are associated with varying disease severity.
  • Key findings included a more common extended haplotype in patients with mild symptoms and protective effects from other genetic factors, while the Neanderthal gene variant showed negative implications for disease progression.

The aim of this study was to estimate the methane-linked carbon footprint (CF) of the suckling lamb meat of Mediterranean dairy sheep. Ninety-six Sarda dairy ewes, divided into four groups of 24 animals each, were assigned to 2 × 2 factorial design. The experiment included the suckling lamb feeding system: traditional (TS), in which lambs followed their mothers on pasture during grazing time, vs.

In ovine species, transcervical artificial insemination (TCAI) is limited by the poor quality of frozen-thawed semen and by the convoluted cervical lumen hampering the passage of inseminating devices. The aim of the study was to test the efficiency of three newly designed catheters with bent tips of 3.5 mm, 5.

The effects of the dams and suckling lamb feeding systems on the fatty acid (FA) profile of lamb meat are reviewed in this article. The suckling lamb can be considered a functional monogastric, and therefore, its meat FA composition is strongly influenced by the FA composition of maternal milk. The major source of variation for ewe milk FA composition is represented by pasture amount and type.

The global consumption, notably in developing countries, and production of beef are increasing continuously, and this requires the industry to improve performance and to reduce the environmental impact of the production chain. Since the improvement in efficiency and the highest impacts occur at farm level, it is appropriate to focus on the profitability and environmental sustainability of these enterprises. In many areas of the world, beef production is economically and socially relevant because it accounts for a significant portion of the agricultural production and represents a vital economic activity in mountain and hill districts of many regions, where few alternatives for other agricultural production exist.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how variations in KIR genes and their interactions with HLA Class I ligands affect the severity of COVID-19 in 396 Sardinian patients.
  • Researchers divided patients into two groups: symptomatic or mildly symptomatic (Group A) and hospitalized patients with severe disease (Group S).
  • Findings showed significant genetic differences, with Group S having a higher frequency of the KIR A/A haplotype and less representation of the KIR2DS2/HLA C1 combination, indicating these factors may correlate with more severe disease outcomes.

This study assessed the effects of dietary supplementation with extruded linseed on milk yield and composition, milk fatty acid (FA) profile and renal and hepatic metabolism of grazing goats in mid-lactation. Forty Saanen goats were divided into two isoproductive groups: one group was fed the control diet (CON) composed of hay and pelleted concentrate and the other group was supplemented with additional 180 g/day of extruded linseed (LIN; dry matter basis), which supplied 70 g/day of fat per head for 9 weeks. Animals grazed on pasture for ∼3 h/day after the first of the 2 daily milkings.

The feedstuffs used in dairy animals must be able to give consumers confidence about the wholesomeness of milk with regard to aflatoxin contamination. The aim of this study was to determine the excretion patterns of aflatoxin M(1) (AFM1) in the milk of dairy goats fed a single dose of pure aflatoxin B(1) (AFB1), which can occasionally occur if feeds are infected by hot-spot growth of molds that produce aflatoxins. Five dairy goats in midlactation were administered 0.

Recent studies estimated a rate of 3-5% of cytogenetic abnormalities involving many different chromosomes in autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). Here, we report on two unrelated male patients with de novo translocations, autistic behaviour and psychomotor delay. These two patients carry a balanced chromosome translocation t(5;8)(q14.

Article Synopsis
  • The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) has set recommendations for determining biological reference values, suggesting a sample of at least 120 healthy individuals, which is often impractical.
  • A new method is proposed in the paper that uses existing laboratory data, analyzing it to identify and remove outliers, thus allowing researchers to estimate reference intervals for health parameters without needing an exhaustive new sample.
  • This approach has been successfully applied to Sarda dairy sheep and may be adaptable for establishing reference intervals in other animal species, age groups, and genders.

Asthma is a multifactorial disease influenced by genetic and environmental factors. In the past decade, several loci and >100 genes have been found to be associated with the disease in at least one population. Among these loci, region 12q13-24 has been implicated in asthma etiology in multiple populations, suggesting that it harbors one or more asthma susceptibility genes.

We describe the first case of mosaic supernumerary marker iso (8p) displaying a karyotype discordance between chorionic villi (CV) and amniotic fluid (AF) cultures during prenatal cytogenetic diagnosis. In the first trimester, cytogenetic analysis after chorionic villi sampling (CVS) was normal in all metaphases in the short-term cytotrophoblast cell culture, but an undefined supernumerary marker was detected in 60% of mesenchymal cells in the long-term CV culture. Informed of the mosaicism, the couple selected amniotic fluid sampling as a second-trimester confirmatory diagnostic procedure.

Endocrine function was evaluated in 20 prepubertal patients with homozygous beta-thalassemia treated with frequent transfusions and long term iron chelation therapy. FSH, LH, PRL, and TSH secretion were evaluated by LRH and TRH testing and L-dopa and ACTH were used to assess GH and adrenocortical reserve. No statistically significant differences were found between FSH, LH, PRL, GH, and cortisol secretion in the patients and in normal subjects.

Total and free thyroid hormones (T3, T4, FT3, FT4), TSH and PRL were determined in basal conditions and after stimulation with TRH in 32 patients affected by autonomous thyroid nodules before and after nodulectomy and in 24 control subjects. Only 7 patients were clinically thyrotoxic and thyroid hormone concentrations were slightly elevated in most cases. In untreated patients the increment (delta) in PRL after TRH was significantly lower than in normal subjects but was not as severely depressed as that of TSH.

Elevated plasma concentrations and abnormal secretory patterns of GH have been found in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. Displacement of brain dopaminergic monoamines by false "neurotransmitters' produced in the gut has been postulated as a cause of encephalopathy. In this study basal GH plasma levels and their response to TRH and L-DOPA were determined in thirty-nine cirrhotic patients and fifteen controls.
