Multiple types of fistulas associated with the appendix have been reported; however, duodenal fistula resulting from perforated acute appendicitis has only been documented in one previous case. In this report, we present the case of an 18-year-old male patient who was diagnosed to have a complicated appendicitis in its normal position with abscess formation. He was started on IV antibiotics and underwent a CT-guided drainage of the abscess with drain placement.

In this Part IV of the article series dealing with the functionalization of the precursor carboxy silica with various chromatographic ligands, immuno affinity (IA) columns were prepared with immobilized anti-apolipoprotein B (AAP B) and anti-haptoglobin (AHP) antibodies for use in immuno affinity chromatography (IAC) in the aim of selectivily capturing their corresponding antigens from healthy and cancer human sera. Diseased human serum with adenocarcinoma cancer was selected as a typical diseased biological fluid. Besides preferentially capturing their corresponding antigens, the AAP B column captured from disease-free and cancer sera, 34 proteins and 33 proteins, respectively, while the AHP column enriched 38 and 47 proteins, respectively.

Introduction: Ectopic adrenocortical tissue is defined as the presence of accessory adrenal cortex tissue outside the suprarenal location of the adrenal glands. It is not an infrequent finding during inguinal operations in infants, however, its incidence in adults is found to be less than 1 %.

The facile preparation of a monolithic capillary column with surface bound polar ligands for use in hydrophilic interaction capillary electrochromatography is described. It involved the conversion of poly(carboxyethyl acrylate[CEA]-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate[EDMA]) precursor monolith (the so-called carboxy monolith) into a Tris bonded monolith by a post-polymerization functionalization process in the presence of a water soluble carbodiimide, namely N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N´-ethylcarbodiimidehydrochloride. The carbodiimide assisted conversion, allowed the covalent attachment of the carboxyl group of the precursor monolith to the amino group of the Tris ligand via a stable amide linkage.

In this research report, the previously developed poly(carboxyethyl acrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) precursor monolith (referred to as carboxy monolith) is further exploited in the preparation of a chiral stationary phase for enantiomeric separations. The carboxy monolith precursor was subjected to post polymerization functionalization (PPF) with the chiral selector (S)-(-)-1-(2-naphthyl) ethylamine (NAS) at room temperature in the presence of N, N´-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) in chloroform. The DCC, which is an organic soluble carbodiimide, permits the linkage for the amine functionality of the chiral ligand NAS to the carboxy group of the monolithic surface forming a stable amide linkage.

In this research report, the post polymerization functionalization (PPF) of a carboxyethyl acrylate (CEA)-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) [poly-CEA-co-EDMA)] precursor monolith with 2-aminoanthracene was carried out in the presence of an organic solvent soluble carbodiimide, namely N,N´-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), yielding the so-called anthracenyl-poly-CEA-co-EDMA monolith. This novel monolith proved to be an excellent monolithic stationary for reversed-phase capillary electrochromatography (RP-CEC) with hydrophobic and π-π interactions of a wide range of nonpolar solutes including those bearing aryl functional groups in their structures such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), toluene derivatives and aniline derivatives as well as solutes carrying in their structures electron withdrawing substituents such as dinitrophenyl-amino acids (DNP-AAs) and di-DNP-AAs. The retention behaviors of the just mentioned solutes obtained on the anthracenyl-poly-CEA-co-EDMA monolithic column were compared to those obtained on octadecyl-poly-CEA-co-EDMA monolithic column prepared from the same carboxy-precursor monolith.

Three LC-based methods, including reversed-phase chromatography (RPC), ion-pair RPC and weak anion-exchange chromatography (WAX), were examined in the separations of precolumn derivatized mono- and oligosaccharides with the following three tagging agents: 1-naphthylamine (1-NA), 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA), and 3-amino-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid (ANDSA). Due to differences in their charges and polarity, the three tagging agents imparted the sugar derivatives varying elution patterns in the three, just mentioned, chromatographic modes. While RPC yielded high resolution separations for 1-NA- and 2-AA-sugar derivatives, ion-pair RPC in the presence of the ion-pairing agent dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in the mobile phase exhibited far more resolution and selectivity than WAX in the separation of ANDSA-sugar derivatives.

In this research report, an in house developed octadecyl monolithic (ODM) column has been exploited in the reversed-phase capillary electrochromatography (RP-CEC) of precolumn derivatized mono- and oligosaccharides with three different tagging agents, namely 1-naphthylamine (1-NA), 2-aminoanthracene (2-AA) and 3-amino-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid (ANDSA). These three derivatizing agents, which differed in their charges, nonpolar characters and optical absorption properties, led to different RP-CEC elution patterns and UV detection signals. In fact, the limit of detection of the derivatized sugars were 50 µM for the ANDSA- and 1-NA-sugar derivatives and 35 µM for the 2-AA-sugar derivatives due to the presence of three fused aromatic rings in 2-AA versus 2 fused rings in the 1-NA and ANDSA tags.

This review article is aimed at summarizing the various strategies that have been developed so far for post-polymerization functionalization (PPF) of organic polymer-based monoliths used in liquid phase separation techniques, namely HPLC at all scales and capillary electrochromatography (CEC).
