The genus Cercospora contains many devastating plant pathogens linked to leaf spot diseases afflicting various plants. Identification of Cercospora species based on morphology or host plant association has proven unreliable due to simple morphology and wide host range in many cases; hence, multi-gene DNA sequence data are essential for accurate species identification. Sugarcane is an important crop in Southern Iran for agri-food, energy, and pharmaceutical industries. The ending of dual nomenclatural systems for pleomorphic fungi in 2011 requires the reconciliation of competing names, ideally linked through culture based or molecular methods. Ophiocordycipitaceae is a diverse family comprising ecologically, economically, medicinally, and culturally important fungi. Twenty-one species of Chaetomium known from Iran were compared on the basis of morphological and molecular characters. Six new species are recognized, five isolated from cereals and one from nematode cysts. A combined sequence dataset of the ITS region, partial LSU rDNA, and β-tubulin gene sufficiently resolved five species groups of Chaetomium that are largely concordant with combined features of peridium structure, ascospore shape and germ pore position.
