Article Synopsis
- Bone marrow contains CD34+/CXCR4+ stem cells that may help regenerate cardiac tissue after injury, particularly after a heart attack (acute myocardial infarction or AMI).
- The study aimed to see if AMI triggers an increase in the number of these stem cells in the bloodstream and how this relates to various clinical factors such as diabetes and smoking.
- Results showed that patients with AMI had significantly higher counts of CD34+ and CD34/CXCR4+ cells compared to a healthy control group, but the expression of the CXCR4 marker was notably lower in the AMI patients.
