Background And Aims: The novel coronavirus-induced severe acute respiratory syndrome (COVID-19) led to one of the most significant global pandemics of the 21st century, causing substantial challenges for healthcare systems worldwide, including those in Brazil. This study aimed to investigate the demographic and clinical profiles of hospitalized patients in Brazil who had both COVID-19 and Crohn's disease (CD) over a 2-year period.

Methods: An epidemiological analysis was conducted using data from Open-Data-SUS.

High electrical conductivity, along with high piezoresistive sensitivity and stretchability, are crucial for designing and developing nanocomposite strain sensors for damage sensing and on-line structural health monitoring of smart carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this study, the influence of the geometric features and loadings of carbon-based nanomaterials, including reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or carbon nanofibers (CNFs), on the tunable strain-sensing capabilities of epoxy-based nanocomposites was investigated. This work revealed distinct strain-sensing behavior and sensitivities (gauge factor, GF) depending on both factors.

The present work describes the extraction of a polyprenylated benzophenone-rich extract from Brazilian red propolis (ERPB), the development and validation of an RP-HPLC-UV method to characterize it, and its evaluation against breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, as well as the normal counterpart MCF-10 A. A mixture of gutifferone E and xanthochymol (1+2), and isolated oblongifolin B (3) were used as chemical standards for ERPB and were also evaluated. The concentrations of 1+2 and 3 corresponded to 16.

Climate change has become a major concern in the twenty-first century, leading to the amplification of extreme events and, consequently, to severe impacts on society, economy and ecosystems. Heatwave conditions in particular, often coupled with extended periods of dryness, have an important contribution in exacerbating rural fires. Here, we propose to analyse the co-occurring interplay between atmospheric heatwaves and droughts in southern Europe, and marine heatwaves in the East Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, between 2001 and 2022, highlighting their linkage to wildfires, on both an individual and compound approach.

Background: Playing guitar involves several physical demands, most inclusive of which are long hours of practice, which can make musculoskeletal symptoms common.

Objetive: To determine the epidemiology of neuromuscular injuries in guitar players residing in Portugal and risk factors.

Methods: The sample consisted of 105 guitar players, being 103 (98.

Objectives: The complexity of aortic arch reconstruction due to diverse 3-dimensional geometrical abnormalities is a major challenge. This study introduces 3-dimensional printed tissue-engineered vascular grafts, which can fit patient-specific dimensions, optimize hemodynamics, exhibit antithrombotic and anti-infective properties, and accommodate growth.

Methods: We procured cardiac magnetic resonance imaging with 4-dimensional flow for native porcine anatomy (n = 10), from which we designed tissue-engineered vascular grafts for the distal aortic arch, 4 weeks before surgery.

Ent-hardwickiic acid is the major compound of Copaifera pubiflora Benth oleoresin traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine as an antimicrobial agent. Microbial transformation of ent-hardwickiic by Cunninghamella elegans ATCC 10028b resulted in two and five antifungal derivatives (four new ones) produced in the Czapek modified and Koch's K1 media, respectively. The derivatives were isolated and their structures were determined by spectral analysis, namely 1D/2D NMR and HR-ESIMS.

The impregnation process of carbon fibres with polymers is challenging to model due to the system's complexity, particularly concerning the following aspects: the complex rheology of the polymeric matrices and the presence of solid, continuous fibres, both with anisotropic properties, and the interaction between solid and fluid, which can change the displacement of fibres into a cyclic dependence. In this work, an interesting approach was considered by setting the fibres as a porous medium whose properties were calculated with microscale/macroscale cycle modelling. In the microscale modelling stage, two main assumptions can be made: (i) a homogeneous distribution with a representative cell or (ii) a stochastic distribution of fibres.

To effectively use (Li) lithium metal anodes, it is becoming increasingly necessary to create membranes with high lithium conductivity, electrochemical and thermal stabilities, as well as adequate mechanical properties. Composite gel polymer electrolytes (CGPE) have emerged as a promising strategy, offering improved ionic conductivity and structural performance compared to polymer electrolytes. In this study, a simple and scalable approach was developed to fabricate a crosslinked polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based membrane, comprising two different glass fiber reinforcements, in terms of morphology and thickness.

Introduction: Ticagrelor might reduce infarct size by exerting a more potent antiplatelet effect or by promoting a potential conditioning stimulus in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. Pre-infarction angina (PIA) is an effective preconditioning stimulus that reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury. Because little is known on the interaction of PIA in STEMI-patients loaded with ticagrelor, we sought to determine if patients loaded with ticagrelor had improved clinical outcomes as compared to clopidogrel and to study if it is modulated by the presence of PIA.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a heart condition that sometimes doesn’t show symptoms until people are older, and it's unclear if fixing it in old people is a good idea.
  • An 83-year-old man with a serious heart problem went to the hospital, and tests showed he could have surgery to fix his ASD, but his heart was not healthy enough.
  • The tests used before surgery helped doctors decide not to go ahead with fixing the ASD, showing that checking first is really important for older patients.

This article analyzes the social and health challenges linked to sex work and the interventions carried out within this arena, taking into consideration the ways in which prostitution is socially marginalized. Basing our analysis on the experiences and understandings of sex workers practicing in the city of Oporto (Portugal), we attempt to understand the main forms of vulnerability faced by this group, along with the ways in which they experience the relationship with State services and social and health interventions that target them. Qualitative field research was conducted involving a case study of an intervention project.

Background: In experimental sepsis, functional and morphological effects of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell (BMDMC) administration in lung tissue have been evaluated 1 and 7 days after therapy. However, to date no study has evaluated the early effects of BMDMCs in both lung and kidney in experimental polymicrobial sepsis.

Material And Methods: Twenty-five female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into the following groups: 1) cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis; and 2) Sham (surgical procedure without CLP).
