Background: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an orthodontic procedure used to correct transverse maxillary deficiency. Due to the anatomical relationship between the palate and the nasal cavity, RME promotes an increase in nasal dimensions, which should hypothetically improve nasal respiratory function.
