Cocoa Mucilage as a Novel Ingredient in Innovative Kombucha Fermentation.

Cocoa tree plantations aim to harvest grains found in the cob to produce cocoa and chocolate. There has been a growing interest in valorizing the secondary components of the cocoa fruit, such as the peel, placenta, and mucilage/pulp, as valuable sources of nutrients for healthy food preparation. In other words, by-products derived from these raw materials are an exploitable source of nutrients in the preparation of healthy food.

Alterations in pharmacogenetic genes and their implications for imatinib resistance in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia patients from an admixed population.

Imatinib is the tyrosine kinase inhibitor used as the gold standard for the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. However, about 30% of patients do not respond well to this therapy. Variants in drug administration, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) genes play an important role in drug resistance especially in admixed populations.

Gender differences in quality of life in adults with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Background: To assess gender differences in Quality of life (QoL) and in sociodemographic, clinical and psychological factors associated with impaired QoL in adults with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1).

Methods: Cross-sectional evaluation in a random cohort of DM1 adult patients from a tertiary care hospital. QoL was evaluated using translated and validated self-administered Diabetes QoL questionnaire (Es-DQoL), and results transformed into a 0-100 scale.

Utility of a low-iodide diet in (131)I whole body scanning of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.

Introduction: (131)I whole body scanning (WBS) is useful in the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). The need to follow a low-iodide diet (LID) to optimize WBS is widely recognized but there are few reports that justify this practice. The aim of this study was to assess levels of urinary iodide in patients who underwent WBS in our service and the possible impact of some changes to the diet on these levels.

Prolactin-like hormone in the nematode Trichinella spiralis larvae.

Expression of prolactin (PRL) or prolactin-like hormone has been reported in invertebrates. We investigated the larval phase of Trichinella spiralis: (a) to express 23 kDa PRL, (b) to define its localization and (c) to test its possible biological activity. Immunostaining in isolated larvae demonstrated positive material to 23 kDa PRL by all along the stichosome, specifically in the stichocytes.
